Next up our reigning champ from KC: Peter Shilliday!

As a swing dancer and musician since 2009, DJ Shillzapoppin, a.k.a. Peter Shilliday, has dedicated nearly a decade to hunting for the top secret formula of swing music that makes it so darn… well… swingin’! In 2012, he picked up Djing as a way to showcase the latest and greatest of his fanatical research. Based out of Kansas City, MO, Peter has since Djed in all corners of the great Midwest, from the wide, open plains of Indanapolis, IN to the wide, open plains of Tulsa, OK.

While his music library is rooted in the classic recordings of the Swing era, Peter also aims to promote current, especially local, swing bands to support the current musicians in the genre. He feels a mix of artists from both past and present are vital for providing inspiration for today’s music and dancing. However, at the end of the day, his methodology is simple: If the tune swings, and if he can’t NOT move when listening to it, it goes on the list.

With CST only FIVE DAYS AWAY 🤯 we are ready to hype up this year’s DJ’S! First up, competing for Tulsa: LAUREL RYAN!

Laurel (rhymes with Carl, not Coral) Ryan, aka DJ Tulsa Technique, aka MC Crystal Lyte National Aerobics Championships, has been spinning the hottest hits of the 20s through the 50s since she was in shortpants. How many 5-year-olds were notorious for draping themselves over the back of the family couch to sing “Java Jive’’ to visiting aunties? Laurel doesn’t know, but she’s heard the story often enough to know that she was at least one of those notorious kids. The first album she ever bought was Peggy Lee, and that’s because her parents already owned most of the Ella Fitzgerald compilations. Laurel was once super awkward around living legend Catherine Russell. She’s been known to roll down her car windows to bless other drivers with her top notch musical taste. Vote for Laurel if you want to get to her “Oops All Bangers” set, which she can assure you contains your favorite song for swinging out.

We are SO EXCITED to announce that this year our Friday night dance will feature the musical stylings of the incredible at the beautiful ✨💃 The Savoy Trio are a staple in Oklahoma City, these local musicians frequently playing venues such as O Bar, The Study, and Bradford House. This opening night event is FREE 🤑 but please support the cafe and tip the musicians!

We’re so excited to announce that CST III will be in the gorgeous Oklahoma Contemporary! We’ll be using the Founder’s Hall, which is a multipurpose room with beautiful views that is frequently used for dance. In 2022, it was the residency hall for a performance of ‘Sanctuary Redefined’ by OKC Artists for Justice and Artists Changing FrEQuencies as seen in the third photo! During our breaks, you may be interested in walking the art gardens or sitting on one of the lawns outside to enjoy the spring air.
