If you're interested in Hickman County History, here's a story of the 1917 cyclone, told to me this morning by my son Matt, who was told the story by Emma Johnson. More on Emma later, but she started the story by saying she had to clean the house (Emma House, we call it), which was undamaged but full of soot from the chimneys. The ladies' hats (remember it's 1917) were all on a table,the brims were full of soot, and Emma demonstrated flapping the hats to remove the soot. Why was Emma (a totally deaf, somewhat privileged young woman) left to clean the house? Her stepmother, Marion Perry Johnson (Marion Eblen was named for her) was working with the Red Cross and "Papa," Robert L. Johnson, was dealing with the bodies of those Hickman Countians killed by the cyclone. He had a furniture store (caskets), funeral business, and livery stable on the back side of the EHouse facing Crume Lane. (pictures to follow, maybe) Oh, one last thing: this is when the court house cupola was destroyed.

Plans are coming right along for Saturday On the Square. Executive Judge Kenny Wilson will be issuing a proclamation to begin the 200th year celebration of the forming of Hickman County. Music will be provided by the very talented Barry Patrick. We are looking for singers who would like to sing along with Barry’s accompaniment. Also vintage car show is off to a good start with Clinton Bank offering prizes of $100, $75 and $50. People are beginning to sign up to show their pride and joy around the court square. Caroline Webb of Heritage Acres, will providing the decorations around The Courthouse Square. Caroline will also have pumpkins, mums and gourds for sale. She and Dixie Major’s Bluebird Food Truck location will be in front of City Hall. You want to join the fun so put this event on your calendar. The fun starts at 11:00 a.m.

The committee is scurrying to find a good kick-off event since we had to postpone the old hymn sing. SO--here's what we know so far--Kick off will be Saturday, September 25, 11pm till 1 pm. just two weeks from yesterday. Name will be "Saturday on the Square." Howard Dillard will read an opening proclamation. We are working on music, food truck, and possibly an old car show. Can this be done in two weeks? We are optimistic about it. With covid on the rise in Hickman County, the Old Hymn Sing will be postponed. A number of singers are in their 80s and 90s, and the committee doesn't want to put them, or anyone of any age, at risk. With all plans in place and programs ready to print, it will be easy to reschedule when possible, so keep your voices in shape!
