The story of Ian McWilliams Radio Journey

When I lost my job in 2011 I saw it as an opportunity to follow my dream of working in radio. I always liked listening to music radio and loved hearing presenters talk and I thought to myself I could do that.

In September of 2011 I signed up for a two year course in Radio Broadcasting and Production with Dun Laoghaire College Of Further Education which is now Dun Laoghaire Further Education Institute. I learned about radio broadcasting, Music Programme Production, news reporting, media studies, ethical and legal issues in Media and Media Industry Awareness. Some of my teachers included Adrian Smith, Geraldine Tracey and Sheila Toibin the daughter of the late Neil Tobin. I graduated from the college in 2013.

Since 2012 I’ve worked as a volunteer radio presenter with 92.5 Phoenix FM. On Friday nights I present a Heavy Metal and Hard Rock show called Rebel Radio. I also presented many other music shows and a talk show, I helped out in the production of an Irish Language Show by working on the sound-desk and was a sports analysist. On many occasions I was asked to cover for other presenters. During my time in Phoenix I have one many awards for my radio work.

I also have presented a show on Autism radio for Blue Nose Week in 2018 where I did a show on famous people who have Autism. I chose to do work there as I have Autism Spectrum Disorder. Last year I helped Phoenix FM on a sound and vision project on Autism where I spoke about how it has affected my life today.
