🔙Throwback to Freetown Film Labs
Back in 2020, we had the privilege of participating in the Freetown Film Labs during the height of COVID-19. We began our journey with the Female Labs, a groundbreaking initiative supporting emerging female filmmakers in Sierra Leone.

Freetown Film Labs, a British Council programme led by the Freetown Media Centre and Nova Studios (UK), aimed to equip young filmmakers with the skills to produce impactful, high-quality short films. From scriptwriting and storytelling to directing, editing, and more, these labs are building a stronger future for Sierra Leonean film.

We’re proud to have been a part of a program dedicated to creating opportunities and fostering the next generation of voices in Sierra Leone’s film industry. Here’s to the power of storytelling, growth, and resilience!

WCW Spotlight: Circle of Us Fellows

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible work of the Circle of Us Fellows, a powerful fellowship co-created by Purposeful and IRIS. This transformative year-long journey brought together 20 young women from Sierra Leone, Kenya, and Tanzania to reclaim and amplify their stories of resilience and resistance.

Through storytelling and filmmaking, these Fellows have documented the unique challenges and forms of resistance that shape girlhood across diverse contexts. Their films push back against harmful narratives, telling the world that girls’ voices matter and are essential for shaping a future rooted in justice and freedom.

From combating FGM, early marriage, and violence to standing for LGBTQIA+ and disability rights, these stories are both a testament to the strength of girls and a call for change. The journey has been one of solidarity, mentorship, and newfound friendships—capturing moments of joy, healing, and collective power.

Together, we celebrate the Fellows’ courage and commitment to authoring change. ✨

Myth Buster: « Fix it in Post »

Ever heard, “Don’t worry, we’ll fix it in post”? Here’s the reality: Post-production can’t fix everything!

While post-production can work wonders with color correction, sound, and effects, it’s no substitute for solid planning and ex*****on during filming. Getting the best shots, lighting, and audio on set saves time, budget, and keeps the film’s quality high!

WCW Spotlight: Hickmatu Leigh

Today, we’re honored to shine the spotlight on Hickmatu Leigh—director and writer of Gboroka, a powerful film that takes viewers on an emotional journey through the Bondo culture in Sierra Leone. Tackling the complex issue of Female Ge***al Mutilation, Gboroka is a story of pain, resilience, and hope that opens up vital conversations.

In her own words: « To all the creatives out there, remember to tell your story with purpose and use your voice to elevate the causes you care about. Success isn’t just about immediate rewards; it’s about the impact you make and the change you inspire. »

Join us in celebrating Hickmatu’s dedication to storytelling that matters💪🏽
