What's happening on the allotment?
This piece of land has been loaned by SARINC to the Steventon Roots and Shoots Community Allotment project. The Community Allotment will provide vegetables and fruit to the Steventon Community Kitchen.
The community allotment will be a “no-dig” allotment. No-dig allotments and gardens have been in cultivation for decades and the number of no-diggers has increased greatly in recent years as scientific understanding of the crucial importance of soil life organisms has been more widely disseminated. Kew, the RHS and The National Trust have adopted no-dig methods for their vegetable plots.
The cardboard was collected by villagers and local councillor Sally Povolotsky arranged for the free compost donation from the Vale of White Horse Waste Team and Severn Trent Green Power which will be delivered on Tuesday. The compost will be collected from the processing site at Wallingford and brought here by Alan Binning of Hill Farm. We are extremely grateful to him for this act of kindness.
Crop growing on this plot will begin next spring. Some of the ground will not be cultivated but the grass and w**ds will be allowed to grow to provide shelter and food for insects, beetles, spiders and other small creatures. Some of these will be predators of slugs and aphids and so will help protect our crops.
If you are interested in volunteering please email [email protected]
