Mother’s Day photo sessions with is Saturday and revisiting the photos from last year has me so excited for our second studio collab.

Real talk—I couldn’t decide which picture to feature first. I’m a sucker for a girl and her 4 legged friend. But the love between these girls and their mama’s is just too precious. Then you’ve got the flower to the face pic…ahh!

Today’s post was supposed to feature the one year anniversary of a gorgeous downtown Louisville wedding, just blocks away from the latest mass shooting in America.

Today was supposed to be about a lot of different things for many people living their lives on this beautiful Spring Monday. It was not supposed to be about loosing loved ones to yet another mass shooting.

How many more people have to die? How many more cities does this have to happen to? When will this s**t stop? If we average one mass shooting a day will something be done? What’s the secret number of devastation we must reach for action?

Kind of a stream of consciousness post today because I’m just at a loss for any words other than “why, wtf and when will it stop.”

Thinking of everyone today and sending thoughts and healing energy to everyone directly affected but also to the whole of our lovely river city. I love you, Louisville 🖤

Botanica News ||

I’m getting away from daily deliveries and focusing more on weddings, events, subscription arrangements and florals for Holidays for several reasons. It was a hard decision and if you want to know why, I’ve laid it out below. If you’re like, “Uh, I follow this to brighten my feed not to know the ins and outs of floristry,” that’s cool too, I appreciate you!

As a solo-preneur I have to make extra sure my time and resources are spent wisely. I am not a retail florist so I don't keep extra flowers on hand. I go to the wholesale flower market and hand select fresh flowers specific to the order. Flowers at the wholesale market are mostly sold in 10-25 stem bunches, so after selecting 5+/- varieties of flowers to include in an arrangement, I've spent more purchasing the wholesale flowers than I would charge for the entire retail arrangement - not to mention the time, gas, hard goods, delivery boxes, tissue, etc.

However, when I know that I have "X" number of subscription orders I can purchase flowers knowing the time, money and product will be used.

This is not to say that I won't ever do daily deliveries. I'm increasing the minimum due to the bespoke nature, custom care, handling and creative design. The website flower page will be changed so that customers may inquire about a delivery rather than automatically submitting an active order form. This will be especially useful as Wedding Season approaches and time will be even more limited. 

My initial goal when starting Botanica was to focus on weddings and events but unfortunately, life had a different idea with a global pandemic. As weddings had to be cancelled, I quickly regrouped and focused on daily arrangements—a source for love and connection to friends that were kept apart due to lockdowns.

Luckily, we’re moving on and the wedding/events side of the business is taking off as was initially intended. And who knows, the business has made so many changes and growth in the past 3 years, more consistent daily offerings may be available in the future.

If you’re still looking for a last minute flowers, I strongly urge you to order locally from one of the many great florists in the Louisville area. 1800 flowers and all of those large companies don’t give a hoot about your order…ever but especially on busy days like Vday!

I've been a little quiet as of late. My intention for January was to work on the back end of the business, revamp the website, and lay the foundation to make this year awesome.

Unfortunately, I spent the majority of my time with my grandmother during the final weeks of her life. Dementia paired with her failing health was gut-wrenching, unbelievably difficult, and painful. But in her lucid moments, one thing was clear, she wanted the company, love, and reassurance of those she loved. So I did. I decided to put as much of my life as I could on the back burner to be there for her.

I'd be lying if I said thinking about how behind I feel with Botanica doesn't send waves of nausea through my body. But being there for granny, as she was there for me so many times before, was a decision I doubt I'll ever regret.

This week will likely remain quiet on my end as we make arrangements and attend her services.

January Order Break ||

I’ll be taking a break on all daily orders/deliveries through the month of January. During this time, I’ll be revamping the website, setting up new procedures, exploring ideas, and meeting with 2023 wedding couples, among other things.

At the end of the week, I’m excited to take a mini business trip to Versailles (KY…Botanica isn’t bougie enough to send me to France…yet), to lock myself in an adorable little cottage and devote all of my energy to reflect and dream on past, present and future Botanica.

Exciting things are on the horizon but it doesn’t just happen. I look forward to using this month to take a step back, look outside the here and now, and plan a big, bright future for myself and my beloved floral business.

With a bum knee, a screaming hip bc of knee, borrowed studio space which is partially outside with temps expected to get so low I don’t even want to type it and more orders than the past two years combined, I’ve gotta shut it down.

Thanks for a record year guys!! If you’re still in need of flowers, keep it local. 1(800) flowers and all those sites are terrible, call a florist directly and everyone wins.

Have you seen the forecast for late next week? Yikes!!

With temps that low all of the flower deliveries will need to be extra wrapped and directly handed from the delivery driver straight to the recipient and inside. Which means every delivery needs a phone number and someone there to accept the order. No one likes frozen flowers!

Holiday order form is LIVE

As you guys may know, it's been a hell of a few months—travel, an insanely busy wedding season, moving the home and studio, a knee injury, and most recently Covid.

I'm on the mend and grateful that I'll be able to accept a select number of Holiday orders. However, I am far from 100% so quantity will be limited and I will not be designing until then to allow more time for my knee to heal/regain strength.

Deliveries will be available 12/21-12/23. All orders must be delivery as we are staying temporarily at a family member's houe while we house/studio hunt.

Well, Meniscus tear and/or knee fracture, it is.

After a frustrating time with Norton Healthcare who said I couldn’t get in to see an orthopedic doctor until Dec. 6th—I cried, begged and sweet talked my way into an appointment with Clark Orthopedic. They were amazing and got me in asap.

Unfortunately, due to Thanksgiving, my MRI isn’t scheduled until 12/1, so I won’t know for sure what I’m dealing with until then.

In the meantime, it’s RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) for me. Which means no orders for the foreseeable future.

Obviously, this f’in sucks. I’m really, really hoping to be back at it before the Holiday’s so I can design for your festivities.

Trying to look at the bright side—this means I can catch up on office work, wedding inquires, proposals, etc. Heck, maybe even make up a dang social media plan which I haven’t done in forever!

-Temporary Pause on all floral orders-

Hey friends—so back in October I inured my knee. Due to weddings/events I couldn’t do much about it and was hoping it’d get better and tried to ignore it.

Unfortunately, over the past few days, it’s gotten much worse and I’ve got to take time to figure out what’s going on. Every step brings searing pain. Ya girl’s falling apart!

Sooo, after I design and deliver today’s orders, it’s off to urgent care. I will update asap.

Hey friends, Botanica will be closed while I’m in Colorado working with my flower sisters from on a stunning mountain wedding in Aspen.

I’m so excited to be back at the Petal—surrounded by mountains, gorgeous blooms, creative minds and some of the best gal pals that side of the Mississippi!

I’ll have limited Email access and time while working, but will be back for the August subscription arrangement deliveries.

Now I gotta wrap my head around lows in the upper 40s and unearth some winter wear!
