Part 5: the Real Cost of Local

Received my .side.farm.flowers “the flower dollar” poster today! Excited to start convos about the real cost of blooms this upcoming season. Our actual numbers are a smidge different (which makes sense, as we are still in our beginning, capital-intensive years).

It’s difficult, as a small business owner, to adequately respond to potential customers who complain about the costs of products. I have spreadsheets and spreadsheets of numbers to back up my pricing decisions. In fact, I probably cut my margins too low lost of the time. But it’s true, there’s some sticker shock at paying $5 or $6 a bloom for a dinner plate dahlia! Ultimately it is always your decision as to whether our flowers are the right choice for you. Accessibility is also a priority, which is one of the reasons I offer a bouquet bar and a la carte wedding and event options. That dinner plate bloom might not be the right flower for your current circumstances, but I’ll happily work with you to find something that is.

Why do flowers cost so much (or so little?) I am dedicated to transparency about numbers and am always happy to have a real, meaningful conversation. To reach my final prices, I look at the cost of inputs — seeds, fertilizer, etc. — the cost of labor, the cost of transportation, marketing, land, supplies, and admin. Then I build in a small buffer. Some flowers are simpler and quicker to grow than others; some, like lisianthus, are cost and labor intensive.

I am committed to making farming a viable career option, and that means running a business that at least has the *chance* of paying myself and employees a living wage. As we enter year 4/5, we are not there yet. But we do get closer each year. I hope other small business owners will consider more pricing transparency as well, as I believe we do ourselves and our customers a disservice when we keep this stuff secret. It’s hard, it’s complicated, and ultimately we’re all just looking for some comfort and joy!

It is with a heavy heart and a lot of hope I write this -
I am officially retiring. I know, you're all like "Oh but Katy you're literally 22, you can't afford to retire!" (I know, I'm working on it).
I have loved building Katy's Flower Wagon. I put my heart and soul into it and loved every moment, even when it was so hard. It was a spontaneous idea from my momma that turned into one of my proudest achievements. I made something beautiful and I am so proud. I have gained so many friends, mentors, ideas, and knowledge.
I have realized it is time for me to let go. It has been so hard for me to make this decision but I am realizing I have a path that I am ready to get back onto and keep marching through life to the beat of my own drum (you already know I do).
I do have a few asks of you -
1. While I am ready to step back, I am looking to sell the business and everything that it has grown. If you, or someone you know, is interested or has questions, please reach out.

I'm gonna be honest y'all, I'm about to graduate and can't figure out what to do!
Should I continue with the wagon? To what capacity?
I want to hear your thoughts. I have had so much support while operating but I know times change. We are out and about a little more this year. Tell me about your relationship with and need for flowers 💐
