September 2024
Another beautiful day with the Vinyl Listening Lounge Club. We met on a late summer evening at the Canna Art Gallery in Northwest DC. A visual art space that displays unique paintings. Many thanks go to the owner and the vinyl participants who attended this event. Especial thanks go out to our special DJ, Zach McCant, from Rhythmlingo Records.
Each guest introduced a few selections. We started the set off with the following;
• Trumpeter Donald Byrd’s 1981 release of “Butterfly”, a composition with beautiful vibes by Isaac Hayes and piano by Myra Walker. Played from his Donald Byrd And 125th Street, N.Y.C. album.
• “I Feel Like Loving You Today” – Donald Byrd
• “California Dreaming” - Eddie Hazel – Eddie Hazel was the prime guitarist for P-Funk dating back to around 1967. I was familiar with the tune from the 60’s group The Mamas and the Papas. However, when it started to play, it sounded nothing like the “California Dreaming” that I remember from back in the day.
• Three selections from Miles Davis accompanied by Ron Carter, Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock, Fred Plaut, Ray Moore, and Bob Cato
• “Nefertiti”
• “Fall”
• “Hand Jive”
• The next songs were introduced and played in honor of our recently departed Brother, Howard Stanley Beverly. Better known as Franky Beverly. Franke touched so many of our lives back in the day. A musical Moses, with a large following.
• “Happy Feelings”
• “Southern Girl”
• “Look At California”
• Another honor was made to another recently passed influential musician, Sergio Mendez and Brazil 77
• “The Real Thing”
• “Right On” by Ray Barretto, an American percussionist and bandleader.
• “They Just Can’t Stop It” (Games People Play) – The Spinners
• “Just As Long As We Have Love” – The Spinners
• “The Makings Of You” – Gladys Knight & The Pips
• “You and Me” – George Duke
• “Gonna Take You Higher” – Sly and The Family Stone
• A recently released 2024 collaboration of Esperanza Spalding and Milton Nascimento, “When You Dream”.
• “Earth Song” – Milton Nascimento and Esparanza Spalding with vocals by Diane Reeves
• “The Mexican” – The Babe Ruth Band
• We ended the set with an up-tempo, skillful rap tune from 1991. “Treat’em Right” by Chubb Rock
Great fun was had by all.
I hope you will join us at our next vinyl-only session to be held in October.
