Day 11 - New Zealand Family Rodeo

A sight seeing day around Christchurch.

Firstly the famous “Cookie Time” factory,
Followed by a visit to the Riccarton markets to try some of the amazing food truck stalls - yummmm..

Being a rainy day we then looked for some indoor fun. Holey Moley won the vote - so - game of mini golf, a game of Ten pin bowling and plenty of arcade games filled an afternoon - before a quick visit to the Riverside markets and dinner at the Chiwahwah Mexican Cantina. We have not been to a bad eating joint yet - but the food here was to die for - so delicious and highly recommended!!!

A quick nail salon stop which the boys were super excited about…before driving to Ginny Nelson’s house who kindly offered us to park up at before everyone goes their separate ways in the morning.

Day 10 New Zealand Family Rodeo Tour.

Not many photos taken today, but a lot of fun was had in front of a massive crowd.

It was our North Island former International Finals Youth Rodeo Representative who shone bright today. Congratulations Kurtis Pertab who placed in both the Rope and Tie and Team Roping.

Also a massive thanks to Patrick and Deanna McCarthy for supplying a breakaway mount, and to all three generous steer wrestling mount suppliers. We are very grateful for the support you showed our competitors.

As this is the last official rodeo of the tour we would also like to thank everyone who has taken us under their wings, we have had a blast at your rodeos and can’t wait to do it all again.

Stay tuned now for some unofficial tour add ons

Travel and sight seeing day “Wanaka to Canterbury”

Well it was a slow start to the day, and a sad farewell to the Cameron family and our new lifelong friends the Tweedie family who we have spent most of our spare time with over the last week.

Whilst it was drizzling rain pretty much all of the way it didn’t stop us enjoying the sights, and we even added a stop over at the Lake Tekapo Hot Springs which we wish we could have spend longer enjoying.

Also along the way at Three Creeks Burke’s pass was a Texaco time capsule - very cool to see.

A late lunch at the Fishtail Indian and Nepalese restaurant was the best decision we had made. It was pie kind of weather so we stopped to grab a pie at a bakery, but being late in the day they were all sold out so decided to have an early dinner. We rated the food very highly at this restaurant and would go back in a heartbeat.

We arrived about 9pm and enjoyed a few snacks and beverages with our chief calf pusher for the trip Oskar Janes, before Cade and Willie joined us while Sean borrowed their car to pick up his daughter Sophie from the airport. It is daylight until about 10.30pm so late nights have been a common occurrence without even trying.

“New Zealand South Island Family Rodeo Tour (open for all family members and encouraging indigenous applicants)

“Wanaka Rodeo Day” - Celebrating 62 Years.

A huge crowd turned out on a nice sunny day for the beautiful setting at Wanaka Rodeo. So far every rodeo has had a natural hill for the spectators to sit on which has been awesome to see - and Wanaka’s was packed. So great to see Rodeo is still so strong in New Zealand.

It was our North Island New Zealand YRO former representative on our IFYR tour to Shawnee Oklahoma some years ago that picked up some money today. Congratulations to Kurtis Pertab for your place in the Rope and Tie.

After the rodeo we all went to the Wanaka Bullock Bar who sponsored the rodeo for the After Party to support those who support the sport.

We once again parked up at the Cameron family home. Kylie and Ryan not only fed all of us, but cooked up a feed and supplied showers for all of their son Cade’s mates as well - such kind and generous people, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their hospitality.

“Waikouaiti Rodeo Day”

Well it was our New Zealand YRO Reps that led the way for us today. Congratulations once again to Codee Cleaver continuing on his winning streak taking out his 6th straight win in the junior Steer Ride. Also congratulations to Amelia Knowles placing in the breakaway roping and also placing with her dad Danny Knowles in the Team Roping.

Unfortunately our two time USA rep Cade Cameron injured himself the prior helping in the backyards so had to join our Steer rider Angus Hollands with his arm in a sling and only able to support from the sidelines.

Was also so great to catch up with our 2017 International Finals Youth Rodeo representative and team member Kurtis Pertab who is down from the North Island for a few rodeos.

We travelled back to Wanaka, once again kindly being hosted at the Cameron family home. Kylie and Ryan put on a spread fit for a King…we couldn’t be more grateful for everything they have done including lending us a gazebo and camp table for our travels as well..

Had a short stop at Dunstan Lake along the way for a quick look. There are so many beautiful lakes to see in NZ… most are too cold for us to swim, but there were other people swimming here - so it was almost tempting…

“Te Anau to Waikouaiti”

A couple of stops along the way, firstly at Lake Waihola, then Woolies to replenish supplies in Dunedin, followed by Evondale Cheese factory and finally Waikouaiti beach before going to the Race course where competitors were asked to camp for the night.

A very cold New Years Eve was a fun night having a few drinks and nibblies at our camp followed by playing games around a few other camps.

Day 5 - 30 December 2024 “New Zealand South Island Family Rodeo Tour”

(open to all members of the family to compete and encouraging indigenous applicants to apply.)

“Te Anau Rodeo day - Celebrating its 56th Year”

A great crowd turned up for a day that was mostly fine but did start and end with a light shower.

Well it was the Steer Wrestler who brought a bit of money back to the camp this time. Congratulations Sean Holland!!!

We also had our pocket rocket Codee Cleaver clock up another win the Junior Steer Ride. Codee was our Youth Rodeo Organisation USA representative at the WCMB in October, and Amelia Knowles our IFYR Representative placed in the Open Breakaway Roping as well.. Congratulations Codee and Amelia!!

We supported the local Moose Bar and Restaurant for dinner - one of the sponsors of the rodeo, and again supported another sponsor for breakfast the Wapiti Cafe and bakery.

Another beautiful location right beside a beautiful lake.

Wanaka to Te Anau

Thank you once again to the Cameron family for welcoming us to park up at your home, and letting us all shower and use your facilities 👌💕💕

After a sleep-in and lazy morning we set off bound for Te Anau Rodeo.

We had a stop off at an old Gold Mine trying to pan for our millions - but unfortunately were back on the road again no richer, except in memories made.

Another quick stop off to replenish supplies and taste the local pies and we set out for Te Anau, arriving at yet another picturesque town with the rodeo grounds set right by a beautiful lake.

A fun night was had by all sitting around a few camps telling yarns and forming friendships.

“Omarama Rodeo day”

An awesome day for rodeo - nice and warm for us Aussies - maybe even a little too warm - it’s just a different heat with that sun - a little like Tasmania in some ways.

We had a great start to our rodeo with our breakaway roper Brandee Ferguson leading the way from the slack early in the day to hold on till second last event to hold the lead for the Win. Congratulations Brandee!!

We also had Codee Cleaver win the Junior Steer Ride. Codee was our USA representative at the WCMB earlier in the year.

Was great to also with our other competitors in a variety of events including the Steet Wrestling and Open Bull Ride, as well as our IFYR representative Amelia Knowles representing in barrel race, team roping and breakaway roping…

What a great start to our rodeo tour. Thank you so much to Pat and Dearna McCarthy for mounting Brandee on a breakaway horse, and Ryan Adams for the Steer Wrestling mount.

A little celebration dinner at the local Boots and Jandle hotel for the biggest feed of ribs ever, then back to the Cameron family at Wanaka for the night with a couple of nice photo opportunities on the way.

Wanaka to Omarama

Today was a free day of travelling only a bit over 100 kilometres to our first rodeo while in NZ, so some sightseeing was in order of course.

Firstly our hosts the Cameron Family took us to their local swimming and fishing hole, that the boys had already been down to fishing. We drove down that had a “wee” walk down the hill to the gorgeous site - all set up with a hammock and all.

Then we went to “Hook” where you go fishing for salmon then have it cooked to your liking. Despite being rather packed we managed to score ourselves a great table to wait while our meal was caught by the boys!!

Then we set off bound for Omarama again with such spectacular scenery along the way.

After setting up camp, an afternoon drink with our freshly caught salmon as a snack was just right. Also great to catch up with some of our YRO represents Danny and Amelia Knowles, Cade Cameron, Cody and Jack N Casey Cleaver. Was lovely to meet the rest of their families and friends as well.

“Queenstown to Wanaka”

Sooo beautiful is the only words to describe the landscape flying over and on arrival - mountains and lakes.

Landing in the beautiful Queenstown was breathtaking from the get go. Thank you to Danny Knowles and family who organised the most amazing home on wheels and had it waiting at the airport for our arrival, we set off to meet other YRO team member families.

Wanaka has a picturesque landscape and is the home of representative Cade Cameron who has represented the team for two years in the USA. His parents Ryan and Kylie and family kindly hosted us and gave us a great bbq dinner, some fun memories and a lovely warm fire 🔥 as the night went on and got a bit nippy for the Queenslanders.

Also great to be joined by our adopted Aussies Rubie Cummings and Loche Cowan at Wanaka.

Once again many thanks to our wonderful sponsors, and hard work of our fundraisers for keeping our team members looking sharp.

Therefore further information will be sent between 16 December and 23 December.

Please note that there is NO mandatory requirement to aise - this is purely voluntary. However fundraising can't commence until these have been signed and returned.

2025 WCMB World Championship (October 2025)
2525 Professional Youth Roughstock Association (October 2025)

You have not been sent any additional information yet and Admin levies are not yet due. Additional information will be sent out in that week between 16 and 23 December..

2025/2026 New Zealand Family Tour - we are sending your EOI's out. These need to be completed so we have a record of you. Admin levies for this will be due end of January and you will have from then for the rest of the year for fundraising..

We are so excited to see so many expressions of interest, and know those that can attend will have the opportunity of their lifetime, and build lifelong friendships across the world.

Looking forward to working with everybody more and taking Team Australia and New Zealand Across the World.
