Ron Trent is a key figure in soulful and house music, known for his innovative approach and for shaping the genre like an “architect of sound.” Inspired by his father, who ran a record pool, Ron began collecting records and producing music in his teens. At just 14, he released Altered States, now a landmark in electronic music history.
In the 1990s, he honed his production skills under Hula & Fingers and co-founded the Prescription label, which became known for its soulful house sound with organic electronics and emotional grooves. After moving to New York, Ron became a respected DJ at iconic venues like Shelter and Shine, blending house, jazz-funk, neo-soul, and global influences in his sets.
He has collaborated with artists such as Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Moodymann, Tony Allen, and many others. His labels Electric Blue and Future Vision serve as platforms for his more experimental work.
In 2016, he founded SODA to preserve and promote the legacy of underground music through cultural and educational events. He played a key role in launching the Silver Room Block Party and the Move Your Body festival, and co-curated a major exhibit on Chicago house music at the Chicago Cultural Center, which led to a 2019 release on the legendary Music Box club.
