Sometimes you just have to hammer that weaker side. Focus down and train but still maintain a sense of play. This helps so much with all skills. Sounds obvious but I can, and have, spent months or even years not doing this with certain moves and skills. Highlight your blind spots, accept them and then decide if something needs work. #lifelonglearning #flow #practice #habit

After feeling completely devoid of energy, the last thing I wanted to do was practise. But I’d made a plan to learn and review The Pistol Pass by Danny Goldsmith and decided to stick to it. Minutes later my whole internal state had changed. Awake, alert and having a lovely time. Trusting in the change is what’s needed sometimes. And so often I forget how powerful movement, and learning can be for mood.

As a magician, it’s easy to guess how a trick will play. The only way we can truly know is to try. This lovely little trick, Holy Sh*t by Paul Gordon had surprised me, but it shouldn’t have. A triple finale that builds nicely and comes at just the right time. It’s all about the responses 😊
Once we learn a new concept, move or trick, it can be easy to lose sight of how good it looks. We become familiar with the workings, and then we can't 'unsee' the method. This familiarity can cause us to lose faith in the effect. When I first filmed this great trick (Bottle by Perseus Arkomanis ), I couldn't tell if it looked good or not. I had seen too much. Only after asking others did I realise how magical this little appearance was. My perception had become skewed.
Remember that this doesn't just happen with magic. Everything I've ever created, written, performed, posted and presented has always come with a dose of imposter syndrome. A feeling that people will pull back the curtain and catch me out. Even if I reread this post before posting, I'll be convinced it's terrible and makes no sense, which may, of course, be the case. But after years, I've learned that this is just part of the process.
The inner critic is a harsh one. It's always there, but we can learn to ignore it. Roll our eyes at its tedious and repetitive voice. Even laugh and joke with it.
So many of us believe the inner voice and quit without never knowing what could have been. So understand that even something lovely may look stale and obvious if left in your hands for too long. So share, ask for help and know that if you like it, someone else probably will too.
