Any hedgehog out in the day could potentially fall victim to flystrike. If a hog is laying out in the open then it needs taking to a rescue centre. Flies pick up on a poorly/hypothermic animal and lay their eggs on them.these hatch very quickly into magotts and eat the hog alive. The females will be giving birth or have already.if a daytime hog is busy.gathering nest material or taking advantage of the bird food then leave alone but observe. Please leave a shallow bowl of water out for them as hard time at the moment as so dry 🦔

Hedgehogs are starting to wake although alot didn't go down as quite a mild winter. Don't tidy your garden too much. Leave leaves as huge amount of bugs in there for birds and hogs. If you see a hedgehog out in the day.it depends of what it's doing as to if it needs rescuing. If walking wobbly.sunbathing or has flies around it.then needs taking to a rescue centre 🦔🦔

I'm getting alot of calls about hedgehogs still being out and about. Once the leaves fall. hogs make their nest.this is what alot use to fill hibernation nest. It's still quite mild and no where near cold enough to send them down. If you are worried about a Hedgehogs weight.weigh it and mark with very small drop on nail varnish.weigh again in few days time. We used to say hogs needed to weight 550g to survive hibernation but our winters are milder.some won't even hibernate if food available and mild. It all depends on the weather and weight of the animal. Any hog weighing 120/140g would need to go to a rescue but remember these are wild animals and keeping in captivity is stressful and should only be done if essential for the animals survival 🦔🦔

Next week looks alot milder so don't be surprised to see a prickly visitor in your garden. Some hogs will wake up if it gets mild but use huge fat reserves so make sure you have food ready 😊🦔🦔🦔🦔

I am still getting calls from people seeing a Hedgehog out at night. If it's a good size and out at night then leave alone. If you feed the birds .that food will drop on the floor and hogs will eat it at night.so if food available.some hogs will keep eating through winter and that's fine as long as over 500g. They could survive at a lower weight but always seek advice if worried about s Hedgehog. If you know you have an active hedghog.put out chicken based cat or dog biscuits or hedgehog food to help it out and a shallow bowl of water 🦔🦔

Always relocate or build bonfires on the day. Hopefully wildlife will benefit again from our lockdown.

This post is public so can be sgared............As winter approaches. hedgehogs need to be around 500g when it gets cold. to survive hibernation. The large hog in picture is 535g and will be fine. The middle one is 312g and may carry on feeding during winter to get up to weight but needs to be kept eye on. The small one is 135g and would go into hibernation but wouldn't have fat reserves and would probably not wake up. If worried about a hog in your garden.weigh it quickly and mark with a little nail varnish.weigh again every few days to make sure it's putting on weight. Putting a wild animal into captivity is stressful.so always speak to a rescue center to make sure it needs overwintering.

This photo shows a very thin.poorly hedghog and what a healthy one should look like. Hogs are starting to build their hibernation nest.once the leaves start to fall as this is one of the main components of their nest. It's not cold enough yet but keep close eye on small hedgehogs. Putting out extra food will help hugely this time of year. Im hearing that some rescue centres are already full with underweight hogs.always seek advice before picking up a hog.unless it's in danger.sunbathing.has flies around it or is injured. Putting any wild animal into captivity is stressful and should only be done when nesseccary.

I'm getting alot of calls about hogs weight needed for hibernation. The second litter have been born now or a few weeks ago. Winter used to start in Oct but the past few years it's been Dec before we get prolonged frosts. Ideally a Hedgehog should weigh minimum of 500g to survive hibernation but that doesn't guarantee survival. Some hogs will feed all winter if food available.or wake up a few times during the winter to feed. If you are worried about a hedgehog always seek advice but at the moment they have weeks to feed up. I have had people phoning me panicking about the young hogs now....winter is a while off still. Taking a Hedgehog into captivity is stressful and should only be done if absolutely necessary.

This is a post from last year. I have been forced to close my Hedgehog rescue as landlord will be selling house in the future.
This is a public post so can be shared. This tiny hogglet was found in the open with its sibling. Something must have happened to mum as way too young to be alone. Eyes aren't open and have no teeth. These hogglets were hypothermic and unable to maintain body temperature without mum.their tummies were sunken from not feeding for quite a while. These white areas on him are flystrike/flyeggs.these hatch into maggots very quickly and eat the animal alive. Please please if you see a hedgehog out in the day seek advice immediately.contact the British hedgehog preservation society for a carer near you. This little soul died the next day.probably from organ failure.its sibling is hanging in there at the moment.
Any hedgehog that in suffering needs to go straight to a vet. If walking wobbly or sunbathing.has flies around it.it needs picking up straight away. Place in a high sided box with a teatowel to suggle under. Place a hot water bottle or empty drinks bottle with a screw a lid next to the hog. Make sure it can get away from heat as too hot is as dangerous as too cold. Once warm offer chicken based cat or dog food and a bowl of water. Don't attempt to feed hogglets this size as need special formula milk and rehydration fluid.

It's with great sadness that I write this post. My landlady died just before lockdown and the family informed us that they are selling the house. I have lived here for over 24 years.have been caring for hedgehogs for 15 so you can imagine how devestatied I am. This means that I have had to close my door to hedgehogs.who knows what the future will hold. One day maybe I can start again. I hope to continue this page for information only and I can give advice.

This is Blue.hedgehog that came into my care yesterday. His spines are all over the place and swollen back leg. As I suspected an abscess. He has dried blood all over his spines from being attacked by something. I'm draining the abscess and he's on painkillers and antibiotics. Eating well which is always a good sign but he's a very poorly Hedgehog.

This is 'woody' who was found in the middle of the road today in Slapton. When curled up he looks ok but he has suffered a trauma to his right shoulder. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs given. It's early days for him. Usually when a Hedgehog is out in the day time.something is wrong.always seek advice from your local wildlife. rescue

It's hedgehog awareness week.please make your garden safe for hogs. Ponds need an escape root. Check long grass before cutting.relocate bonfires before lighting.keep netting at least a foot off the ground and DON'T use slug pellets. If your worried about a hedgehog always seek advice as the sooner it's with a carer the more chance it stands of survival. 🦔

This wasn't meant to be an information page but as I can't reach people through my talks I will post more awareness on here. These photos are of flystike.this hedgehog had a suspected strimmer injury and the flies homed in and layed their eggs.these will soon hatch into maggots and eat the hedgehog alive. Please please check long grass before strimming and if you see a Hedgehog out in the day always seek advice.

Blind hedgehog Rubarb went to his new home today. A totally secure garden.

This is a Hedgehog that arrived today. People had put grass seed down and covered it in netting. Thankfully only yesterday so hog was caught in it last night. They cut most of it off but was wrapped round whole of body.round neck and front legs. Luckily she seems to be ok. I will keep her for few days to make sure. Quite a few ticks safely removed too. Please keep netting over a foot off the ground. The people were mortified it had happened. One very lucky hedgehog. This post is public to raise awareness 🦔🦔

All about me and my hedgehogs

I founded Leighton Buzzard Hedgehog Rehabilitation in 1995. I take in sick, injured and orphaned hedgehogs from the public and local vets. I’m registered with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society as a carer.

These talks will help me to care for approximately 130-170 hedgehogs that come into my care each year.

Hedgehog numbers are in huge decline and my hope is to make people aware of their plight so we can do something to help these beautiful iconic creatures.

I will bring a hedgehog to the talk/party and spend roughly 40 minutes educating about hedgehogs and what I do, then 20 minutes for questions.
