I was recently inspired by a world traveling photographer who came through our tiny town and had lunch with me. He described his work as “pieces of a whole”. He would travel to famous places but instead of taking the same shot as thousands of other photographers, he would find small details—lamps, benches, patterns in the ground—and shoot those instead. The observer might not have any idea that the photo was even taken at a well known location, but to the artist, or the locals, it was a lot more.
Anyways, this is an emergency slide attached to a 100+ year old school in town. If you’ve ever driven through here, it’s an obvious landmark. Everyone I sent this photo to knew immediately what it was. I also really liked how much contrast there is between the left and right half. It’s all one color, the sunset just happened to be at the right angle, and the brick on the wall isn’t going to reflect much, if any light at all.
