0 - The Fool
A commonly misunderstood card, all twenty two trumps are encompassed by (and issue from) The Fool. Over twenty four pages are dedicated to this card alone in The Book of Thoth by Aleister Crowley. Commonly recognised as the pagan Green Man, The Fool can also be identified with other dualistic beings such as Baphomet. He represents the source of creation; the point of nothing from which all else springs.

New beginning. Intuitive impulse. Risk-taking. Trust. Leaping into the void. A leap of faith.

I - The Magus
The Magus is a title for the second highest level of spiritual illumination a human can attain. Considered the male correlative of The Priestess, The Magus represents Will. Here we see Mercury identified as the vehicle by which ideas manifest.

What action are you taking to manifest your Will?

Wisdom. Receiving messages. Responding to call and stepping into power. Development or usage of skills. Tools of manifestation. Finances. Business and entrepreneurial pursuits. Craft. Cunning. Willpower. Potential interference. Deceit. Theft.

Wisdom, Will and Word are keys to what? Mercury juggles eight symbols in the air; four pertain to the weapons of the Magus. What do the others represent?

II - The Priestess
As an initiatrix, The Priestess acts as the catalyst for connecting humans with the divine. She is the Spiritual Mother associated with the Moon. This is an exciting card but cautions one to remain grounded during their spiritual journey.

Follow your intuition. Look for the signs. Beginning of a spiritual journey. Spiritual discovery. Remember to remain balanced and grounded. Change or fluctuation.

III - The Empress
If The Emperor represents the classical archetypal male, The Empress represents the classical archetypal female (mother.)

IV - The Emperor
On the one hand I’m biased towards this card as I’m an Aries. On the other hand I feel called out. The Emperor represents the classical, archetypal male; resolute and unwavering. As with all things there are times where this is necessary; to lead and protect. In it’s negative aspect it can endanger not only the individual but those around them.

Are your decisions serving others or yourself?

MEANING
Initiative. Ambition. Victory. Conquest. War. Excessive confidence. Ego. Overly aggressive. Rashness. Energy. Vigour. Stubbornness. Maintaining position. Resolute and unwavering.

NOTES
We find the unification of the red and white tincture in Art. This is necessary to accomplish the Great Work.

V - The Hierophant
The Hierophant is a medley of traditional and Thelemic symbolism and ultimately portrays union with our Holy Guardian Angel. Hierophant means teacher. In the new Aeon of Horus the feminine is empowered, indicated by Isis below and a key decorated by Borromean Rings, representing the Triple Goddess: Virgin, Mother and Crone.

MEANING
Teaching. Manifestation. Help from higher authorities. Patience. Organization. Peace.

NOTES
The card celebrates the union of our microcosmic consciousness (the child within the pentagram) with that of the macrocosm. This is illustrated by the union of the pentagram and hexagram. Man = 5. Divinity = 6.

VI - The Lovers
This card is contradictory in nature. We observe both separation and unification: the dualistic marriage of opposites and the swords that sever. In essence, The Lovers card represents the first process of alchemical transmutation. Due to it’s alchemical complexity I have added notes below for those so inclined.

What other aspects of self are you willing to embrace?

MEANING
Willingness to embrace a different aspect of self, leading to expanded awareness. Open to intuitive inspiration. Romantic idealism and thoughtfulness divorced from practical consideration.

NOTES
We see characters inspired by the creation story of Genesis in the Bible: Cain and Abel, Lilith and Eve. Separate elements are combined in the process of procreation. If the Swords represent Solve, which card may one find the next process of Coagula? Swords and sorcery aside, it seems The Hermit would die to get a hold of that egg… Although love is blind, is it wise for blindfolded Cupid to fire his arrow from a crowning position? Only Yod knows…

VII - The Chariot
The Chariot visually portrays commitment, and on a deeper level spiritual marriage. This is supported by the sign of Cancer representing commitment to the homestead and The Knight Templar further championing discipline and single-mindedness.

Are we fully committed to those we love, or are those commitments hindering our personal progress?

MEANING
Commitment. Faithfulness. Triumph. Victory. Single-mindedness. Potential obstinance - unwilling to change one’s beliefs or perspective.

NOTES
Abracadabra embroidered in the canopy of the Chariot alludes to Abrahadabra, meaning the marriage of the microcosm and the macrocosm. The Grail signifies immaculate conception.

IX - The Hermit
We can lose our way by putting others' needs before our own. The Hermit indicates a time to regroup, reflect and refocus.

An inward journey, confronting the darkness. In the dark but searching for light. Illumination lies within. Withdrawal. Grounding. Rest after great expansion. Time for self and re-establishment of boundaries.

NOTES
Crowley states that this card contains the entire mystery of life in its most secret workings. We see The Hermit carrying the lamp of the Sun. One may compare the Sun to Yod.

X - Fortune
Like The Sun, Fortune is considered a positive card. Unlike The Sun, there are a few caveats… In the same way Fortune can grant positive change it can also swing in the opposite direction. Perhaps the bolts of lightning allude to potential danger? The Universe is ever-changing so expect the unexpected.

Are you ready for quick and sudden change?

MEANING
Change of fortune or good fortune. Forward motion. Visionary perspective.

NOTES
The trickster god may move you in a direction you don’t anticipate… Sometimes our passions can create more chaos than desired! Remember to keep things in balance. Beyond the Abyss one is unaffected by the forces at play below.

XI - Lust
It’s easy to associate Lust with carnal pleasure, but keep in mind that the imagery in these cards are metaphorical. While religions of the former Aeon promoted monogamous marriage to spirit, Lust exalts marriage with All. This is viewed by the Judeo-Christian religion as spiritual adultery.

Do you feel comfortable expressing yourself to the fullest?

MEANING
We are invited to let go and express our true, passionate selves shamelessly. Full experience of the pleasures of life through energy and action. The practice of harnessing magickal power.

NOTES
Crowley intentionally uses blasphemous imagery of the old Aeon to illustrate a more accurate view of new Aeon spiritual perception.

XII - The Hanged Man
The imagery of The Hanged Man clearly portrays sacrifice. However, this is not in the traditional sense of an archetypical self-deprecating saviour... This is the new redemption.

Dogma = damnation?

MEANING
Chosen to accept others beliefs over your own. Caught between life and death in a place of suffering (between old beliefs and spiritual liberation.) Something must die in order to be reborn. Sense of failure. Testing of your beliefs.

NOTES
One must change their perspective in order to see the greater picture. The noblest duty of the enlightened is to bring enlightenment to the unenlightened.

XIII - Death
Death is very significant to me as it was the first card I ever pulled. I quickly learned not to fear the process of change and realised that I was growing spiritually, achieved by putting doctrines which no longer served me to rest.

What are you willing to put to death in order to grow?

MEANING
Transformation. Change, voluntary or involuntary. Dying to old ways of thinking. Logical development of existing conditions. Prepare for a huge shift in perspective or circumstance.

NOTES
Death is the final stage of the Great Work. Technically speaking, this alchemical process of change is called putrefaction. Apparent death or destruction is merely an illusion.

XIV - Art
Despite this card’s beautiful imagery, “Art” is a reference to the ancient art of Alchemy. This card brings a joyful and positive message, but requires further effort from the querent. Due to the complexity of the imagery I have elaborated in the notes below.

What actions are you willing to take in order to succeed?

MEANING
A moment to recognise what you’ve accomplished and how far you’ve come. However, there is still a way to go. Realisation of action necessary to achieve goal. Action based on accurate calculation. Combination of forces (collaboration/teamwork.)

NOTES
Art foreshadows the final stage of the Great Work. Alchemical transmutation and dualism represented in the lion and eagle switching colours, while male and female merge into a adrogonous figure: unification of the Emperor and the Empress (white tincture united with red tincture.) Art is the “coagula” to The Lovers “solve.” New representation of Diana the Huntress (Sagitarius.) Golden Orphic Egg in the background represents dualism (Phanes, the golden winged primordial being.)

XV - The Devil
Although I recognise this card as representing far more than the name suggests, it’s true meaning initially alluded me. At times we become so transfixed by our desires that we lose sight of the truth. When in denial we become our own worst enemy, AKA, “The Devil.”

MEANING
Confronting temptation. Sexual, passionate life force at play. Blind impulse or urges. Obsession. Denial. Obstinance. Masculine energy at its most masculine.

NOTES
The goat represents Pan. He is depicted with a phallus (as represented by the Tree of Life.) Inner conflict represented by female loss and male aggression. Massive BDE (TWSS.)

XVI - The Tower
It’s hard to ignore the powerful imagery represented in The Tower. This card commonly carries negative connotations (like Death and The Devil.) Despite the severity of the situation, the key takeaway to keep in mind is “breakdown or breakthrough.”

Are you willing to embrace radical change to grow?

MEANING
Warning. Danger. Destruction of plans. Foundation must be established before building (tear down obstructions such as old ways of thinking.) Tremendous change of awareness. Radical change. Breakdown before breakthrough.

NOTE
The serpent represents the will to live, while the dove represents the will to die. This illustrates an inner conflict. Purification through fire. The crucible is for silver, the furnace is for gold.

XVII - The Star
Although the colour and imagery of The Star portrays a tangible melancholy, the overall message is a positive one. An unlikely solution will present itself in due course, as long as you remain open-minded.

Are you able to trust your inner voice?

MEANING
If the preceding card The Tower is all about tearing down, The Star is all about new beginnings. The Goddess is in the process of forming/birthing something. Signifies hope, certainty and peace. Provides clarity and spiritual insight. Unexpected help. Promotes the creative process and new perspectives.

NOTE
The seven rayed star (Seal of Babalon) represents the Mother of Abominations (Babalon, meaning wicked.) This is reinforced by the Chalice/Graal symbology. The Grail is dualistic, representing love and death. Crowley suggests the Nuit and The Scarlet Woman are one in the same.

XVIII - The Moon
Although most would consider this a terrifying card, I view it quite differently. This card confirms that you are (or are about to) work through a final great trial before a breakthrough. I personally find this encouraging! The Moon encourages us to look within and is associated with Shadow Work.

MEANING
A final test from the Universe or at the brink of important change. The Moon acknowledges the tremendous difficulty of the task at hand/lying ahead, yet reassures us that it will come to an end (as illustrated in the waxing and waning of the Moon.) The Moon shines a path of light through the darkness of illusion and our deepest fears.

NOTE
If The Priestess represents Luna in her highest aspect (waxing), then perhaps The Moon represents Luna in waning (supported by a waxing crescent moon towards the top of the card.)
