2 years ago, I accidentally invented the greatest game at The Veteran Car Run. Hi-fiving the passengers of the open top cars!

And today is the Veteran Car Run - SHALL WE PLAY?

Our bit of the route generallysees vehicles between 8.30am and 11am. The pre 1905 vehicles:

🏁 Drive/ride up Brighton Road from Redhill,
πŸ₯“β˜•οΈ Past the Earlswood 2nd Reigate HQ with their bacon butty/ hot drinks stall,
⬆️ Towards South Earlswood, and onwards to Brighton.

29/10/2024

We've organised a Christmas grotto type market at work. Come on down for trees, lights, ornaments and more PLUS enjoy a hot drink and cake and help us raise money for MacMillan.

I have never felt so seen! πŸ‘€

I do this too! Anyone else? Maybe we should take a promenade around the grounds one afternoon?

Thanks so much to Sarah for passing on this utter gem from yesterday's Halloween event at Earlswood School. Keep sending your overheard snippets my way!

Can you see your house? Maybe I'll use this next time we hold a Jumble Trail!

And about that... I was thinking March, June and September might be good months to hold the Earlswood Jumble Trail. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

This sign is nothing to do with Eco Earlswood and everything to do with the new housing development on the corner of St John's Road and Emlyn Road. In case you were wondering.

Apparently, they went on to talk about how all the neighbours were surprisingly middle class! πŸ‘€

Worries me a tad that people think Redhill is the ghetto, but pleased we're casually smashing down archaic stereotypes!

Well this is very exciting! I woke up to learn I've been nominated for the "Make It Happen""Community Star Award from Stars in Surrey.

It is very humbling to receive this nomination, in amongst the amazing work other organisations do in Surrey. THANK YOU SO MUCH to anyone who nominated me πŸ₯³

BUT. My passion for creating a sustainable community goes beyond awards and being in the limelight. I really believe that by doing things together, as a collective, we have the power to change our corner of the world. πŸ™Œ

πŸ‘‰ When people ask me about Eco Earlswood I try to explain that being a vegan, zero waste, tree hugger by yourself from home is a drop in ocean. But being a part of a local movement to create better, creates impact and makes a lasting difference.

RATE MY LOOK! Which one is your favourite?

Yes, you guessed it. I found my fancy dress box in yesterday's loft declutter. I am a huge fan of fancy dress, but I'm very aware that costumes and fancy dress are the opposite of sustainable and, in fact, very throwaway.

βœ…οΈ Earlswood School set out to minimise costume waste in March 2024 when they set a theme for World Book Day of "Come as a Real Person". This also took away the pressure parents feel of having to fund another costume for school. BUT!

There's still a long way to go. Specifically with Halloween fast approaching. In 2019, The Fairyland Trust investigated the waste generated from fancy dress costumes at Halloween. 😱 They estimated that 2,000 tonnes of plastic waste would be created from 7 MILLION discarded costumes.

My 5 top tips? πŸ‘‡

1. Start a FANCY-DRESS BOX full of mix & match accessories. Make a commitment to only use items from your box. πŸ‘’ Items I find useful are wigs, capes and hats.

2. MAKE OR REPURPOSE your outfit! We've ONLY made costumes for all school dress up days for the past 4 years. Let me know if that is something you'd be interested in getting tips on. πŸ¦„ We papier-mΓ’chΓ©'d the Uni Kitty head in picture 5.

3. Opt for a SECONDHAND costume. Shop around on Vinted or FB Marketplace. This can be hugely cost saving too. 🧑 The orange wig is part of a Flame Princess outfit I bought on eBay in 2016.

4. Choose NATURAL MATERIALS. If you do buy new, try to avoid synthetic materials like polyester that take a long time to break down. Cotton, bamboo and linens are much better. 🐢 The dog mask is made from cardboard!

5. Host a COSTUME SWAP within your kids' class or source a costume lending library. πŸ’‘ Facebook is home to multiple fancy dress swap groups. Does anyone know if we have one locally?

♻️ Ultimately, it is very possible to reduce waste and still look fabulous because, Waste isn't Waste until it's Wasted.

We came, we saw, we litterpicked!

TOP OFFENDERS: Stella Artois cans, Twix and Milky Way wrappers, and v**e cartridges.

UNUSUAL FINDS: a hammer in a bin bag, epic chunks of polystyrene and baby scales!

AMOUNT COLLECTED: 9 purple bags of rubbish in 1 hour πŸ’ͺ But, there's a lot more to do still.

NEXT STEPS: Arrange a second litterpick, find out who owns the land and put pressure on them to maintain it OR *sharp inhale of breath* explore adopting the land.

πŸ₯° Thank you so much to everyone who came out to litterpick Earlswood Brook Patch, on Hooley Lane this evening (4/9/24). You are awesome!

Camping... because therapy is expensive.

Honestly! A long weekend of slow living in the great outdoors was all I needed to reset. The fact that we hung out with our Essex family is the vegan icing on the gluten-free cake!

We listened to Crosby, Stills & Nash, visited an on-site car boot sale, swam in a lake, went for a litter picking walk, picked blackberries, hung out with family, roasted marshmallows and slept under the stars.

What are you doing this summer to re-set?

The night that I won an award from the Reigate & Banstead Mayor, and then decided to stage my own "Hello magazine" style photo shoot in the Mayor's chambers... some snaps of the evening.

Joking aside, I was very humbled to be nominated by local residents Claire and Jerrine for an Individual Volunteer Award 🫢

Such a large chunk of Eco Earlswood's work is campaigning for better for where we live through campaigns and pop-up events. It feels incredible that together, we're starting to make a difference.

Shout out to all the other incredible volunteers who were acknowledged in this evening's award ceremony. Particularly proud that the Chairman & Treasurer of Earlswood 2nd Reigate Scout Group were included πŸ™Œ

So this feels like the best news of all time. Fiiiiinally after over 18 months of being closed, have reopened our beloved Pavillion Cafe in Redhill's Memorial Park - just in time for summer.

I vote we brush over the fact that it has been an entire year since the council promised they'd re-lease the cafe AND a staggering 14 months since I embarked on my petition to get the toilets (in the very least) reopened. Who remembers the iconic poo emoji outfit? πŸ’©

So hallelujah for Florries πŸ™πŸ’šπŸ™ Let's "Show Up For Local" and shower them with support!

Here's an idea.πŸ’‘ Inspired by my friends village in Kent. You know when you leave your unwanted bits and bobs outside your home for someone to rehome?? What if, as a community, we all did this on the same weekend?

For example, the first weekend of every month? So every first weekend, we could walk or drive around browsing and rehoming each others doorstop donations or curbside clutter?

πŸ‘‰ I'D LOVE TO HEAR SOME FEEDBACK ON THIS! πŸ‘ˆ

In other news and related to the image, I left some free aloe vera plants on the wall outside the Marquis of Granby pub earlier. Hoping they've found good homes! 🌱
