I got one of my first tattoo's at Purple East downtown Grand Rapids. The butterfly on my back (her name is Parkay - cause I can't believe she's not a real butterfly) was a gift from my foster dad for my 18th birthday.

At that time they had the skate park and it was literally a staple and had a lot of traffic. These laces were safe spaces in a world outside where we were criminalized and tormented for our love of herb. Purple East and Shakedown were all we had for a long time. 💜

Over the years Purple has shifted gears a few times. It has moved locations and scaled down, but, at the heart of it all is a man I truly admire and support who holds tight the spirit of what I miss so much about our culture. Drew Phillippy has single handedly taken on something that could have died long ago, but, he gives himself, his time, his effort, his heart to keeping Purple East alive.

I knew way back when I was a heavily involved in the campaign that put medical 🌳 on the ballot that eventually/finally passed with ease that legalization would lead to what we have now, which is the gross consumerism, McDonald's version of 🌳. We jump in line to buy taxed versions of this in heavy plastics that will outlive our great grandchildren for ONE joint. Completely out of the spirit of what 🌳 was for us for all this time.

Now with cheap versions of shops everywhere, and online shopping, places like Purple East are struggling. The truth is, it's very close to being a thing of the past. A distant memory of a time long ago.

It's a damn shame.
Cause my message from mother g***a was that we were connected to nature. That this was the last piece of that sacred fire that we all gathered around to share and connect over. Now its all vapes and dispo's.

I'm just saying...
If you need something REAL in your life - a piece of glass, art, clothing, etc from real people IN YOUR COMMUNITY, consider making an effort to show these places your support.

And, I'm not knocking on all "other" places...I'm just saying. Consider your sources and support the places and things you consume with intention and in alignment with your personal values, please. You have to admit our addition to convenience, consumerism and gluttony are out of control. I thought we were figuring that out and it seems like we're backsliding again into apathy now that we have all these pacifiers.

Had the most amazing time sharing space, time, and energy with an incredible community of creative and like minded individuals at Lakes of Fire this weekend. There is something special about that "work hard play harder" concept in the burner community. I love the collective contribution and emersive experiences we create together in the spirit of sharing and sustainability.

We are continuously so blessed and my heart is overjoyed.
