BLACK DIAMONDS IN A KICK A*S LISTENING ROOM. Link in bio for tix.

Black Diamond thrives on the chemistry and compositions of saxophonists Artie Black and Hunter Diamond. They met while studying under David Baker and Tom Walsh at Indiana University. A mutual admiration for the collaborative recordings of saxophonists Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh led them to experiment with their own two-tenor palette, and it quickly became apparent that the variance in their tonal and artistic approaches created a captivating sense of balance. In Chicago, the band has been featured in residency at Andy’s Jazz Club, The Drake Hotel, and The Whistler. Other performances include the 2018 Chicago Jazz Festival, and associations with the Jazz Institute of Chicago, Sounds of the City Workshop, the Anagram Series at Elastic Arts Foundation, and the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective. The band has been on three U.S. tours and will make their EU debut at the 2024 We Jazz festival in Helsinki, Finland.

DAVID BIXLER QUARTET SUNDAY MATINEE (WITH FREE SAMOSAS)!!!! 😋✨

THE LANGSTON HUGHES PROJECT vol. 1 (2024), which PARIS-MOVE describes as “a touch of genius” is a new recording featuring music inspired by the poetry of Langston Hughes.

CORTEX RETURNS ON SATURDAY!!!

Cortex is coming back to the US, after a mandatory pandemic break. They have been busy, though, and one of the projects the last two years has been a collaboration with the Norwegian guitar extraordinaire Hedvig Mollestad!

For this first US tour after the break, they are bringing Hedvig along with them, as well as some new records and new music!

Hedvig Mollestad brings additional fuel to an already lit ensemble, and you can expect the whole works from aching ballads to full-throttle blasts!

We can’t say it often enough, so we’ll say it again: Creative music creates singularity by recreating space-time. By bringing together approximate bodies, in the same place and on the same backdrop, at the same time, and from past to future, from present to future, and back again. From
Chicago: Greg Ward, one of the most agile and zesty saxophonists of his generation, a distant
descendant of Johnny Hodges and a close partner of Mike Reed, a worthy disciple of Von Freeman
or Fred Anderson, i.e., unique in his genre (free funk swing or otherwise), whom nothing frightens, in
a flash or a plume of smoke; Isaiah Spencer has also proven himself on the Chicago stage or
belvedere, since his apprenticeship with Ernest Khabeer Dawkins: his (hypersensitive) drumming is
obviously propulsive, is naturally ardent, he feigns a certain nervousness to adhere to everything
going on around him and more. From France and Brittany: double bassist Hélène Labarrière sails and
capsizes freely over the equator, the tropics, and even the meridians, thanks to the submarine of
the most liberated (unsubdued) jazz, but also on the sailboats of so-called traditional music or the
steamships of so-called contemporary music.

No one can predict the outcome of their story, except that it began as a story and will end
as a story. At least this one, to begin with, to play with: improvising musicians meet—human beings
on Earth—to melt backgrounds. To sift through the “here and now” in search of ephemeral or eternal
nuggets of gold.

Entre Amigos is a creative collaboration featuring award-winning Chicago-based musicians Roy McGrath (Sax), Gustavo Cortiñas (Drums), Hana Fujisaki (piano), and Kitt Lyles (Bass). The group draws on more than a decade of rich musical friendship to create honest and exciting sonic experiences. Featuring original compositions by each member, Entre Amigos’ music masterfully blends the sounds of Jazz tradition and innovation through hard-hitting arrangements that cut the fluff and reveal each musician’s singular voice. Following a monthlong tour in Asia in January 2024, the group hopped off the plane and into the studio to cut two soon-to-be released albums, capturing the music and emotions fresh from the tour.

Since its Fall 2022 Inception, Undisclosed Sims has quickly become one of the most creative and prolific bands working in the Chicago scene of jazz and improvised music. Simulate, the group’s first recorded material, exposes the band’s deep and diverse collective language producing an album that draws influence from ambient music, kraut rock, free jazz, and art-rock. Throughout-Wills McKenna, Luke Polipnick, Andrew Scott Young, and Adam Shead-prove again and again that they are here to stay with their blistering yet deeply lyrical approach to improvisation and composition. Undisclosed Sims is excited to share their creative effects-forward improvised and post-rock music soon in Milwaukee, and they will play two sets on November 21st, starting at 7:30 pm.
