One of the greatest joys of a wedding planner is developing a design plan, but above that is when you see your client’s reaction.
The start of the new year feels awfully bleak, and I’m having to remind myself daily that in all of history, there has always been good and evil. As for some of us, it feels like the world is burning, and we all have to go about our daily lives and little jobs as if it isn’t. I am grateful for the privilege that my job is to plan celebrations.
So while planning this wedding in particular, the goal is to celebrate q***r love in such a way as to say it has always been here - and it always will - and it will always be celebrated.
I was initially inspired by Sappho and Erinna in a Garden at Mytilene by Simeon Solomon, 1864, housed at my favorite museum of all time,
I let myself deep dive into researching more about the painting, which led me to publications on lesbianism in the Victorian Era.
Ahh how we love to learn the things we did not in history class…so, with the help of the internet and my JSTOR account, I immersed myself in articles that gave me comfort. I watched timepieces, including The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister, and sketched my design ideas. There was openness and lack of prosecution during this time, stories that continue to be shared, and love stories that we still look to. And there was art created.
I wholeheartedly believe that fashion is political, trends are political, and weddings are political. And this one absolutely will be.
Having coffee with my clients this week, discussing current events, and seeing their reaction to what I have come up with put a little color into this grey January. I honestly can’t wait for how beautiful this day will be and for rainbow flags aplenty.
Cheers,
Helen
