The Reality of Owning and Operating a Small Business
Running a business is no easy feat.
What’s often overlooked is the immense pressure it can place on your mental well-being, leading to stress, anxiety, and even depression even for those who are typically laid back.
As a business owner, you become more than just a service provider, you may be treated as a commodity rather than an individual. People will talk about you, compare you to others, and sometimes take advantage of your efforts. Friends and family might expect discounts, and your hard work can be undervalued in favor of larger stores.
You constantly worry about missing an email or message, wondering if it will be perceived as intentional or if it could disappoint someone. In reality, it’s just a matter of not being able to attend to every communication as you balance numerous tasks.
The demands of running a business often strain personal relationships and create a lack of work life balance. You’re expected to wear many hats: director, worker, marketer, accountant, cleaner, all while fulfilling roles as a parent, spouse, family member, and friend. Juggling these responsibilities is one of the most challenging aspects of business ownership.
There’s a reason many small businesses don’t make it past five years, and those that do often experience a sense of being overwhelmed. Success can come at a steep cost, exhaustion, burnout, and navigating an unpredictable landscape, especially in recent years when much has been out of our control.
Please remember that small business owners are regular people with full lives, striving to keep their businesses afloat. We ask for kindness, patience, and your continued support. When you choose to support small businesses, you're contributing to the very foundation of our economy.
Let’s keep supporting small businesses and ensure they thrive for years to come.
