Gratitude and love to all who locked on to last night’s show or supported 💛

It was such a pleasure to have the ones like Geri Irie, Sista G and ReQuinha, hailing outta Glasgow, grace the airwaves with their fine selection.

This is the last Roots Sisters show this year and it may be on a brief hiatus due to travelling so I just wanted to take a heartfelt moment to express how much love this project has brought into my heart.

The hours that have been spent creating, bonding with, supporting sistren all over the world are priceless and have been something that, despite the concept’s obvious mission, I never truly expected would bring such a beautiful organic sisterhood and so much joy.

There have been Roots Sisters features from around the world who I have had the pleasure to be able to host in my home, and I would perhaps never have met or spoken to them without this projects existence. Some of these sistren have become some of my closest friends, true soul sisters. I have never even wanted to attach my name to the Roots Sisters as I didn’t want it to be about me, so it’s new for me to speak in first person here.

I also want to take a moment to shout out the wonderful Mistykal B who runs all things promo at Roots Sisters. Her loyalty and dedication to the cause is cherished and over the last year or so watching her develop as a selector and radio show host has been incredible. I urge you to give her a follow so you can watch her journey, as with all the sistren who have featured on the show.

ReQuinha the selectress of sunshine as one part of Femme45, Radio Buena Vida resident and long time record collector, sharing her favourite roots and dub selections alongside her skanking sisters.

Geri Irie
A firm regular of reggae dances, always coming with a smile and energy to nice up the place! Hometown Soundsystem family, she has warmed up for them playing her vinyl selection and has also been a guest feature on their radio show.

Sista G
A big roots fan who’s been involved in the Glasgow reggae scene for years, she loves to play vinyl and to feel the essence of roots and culture on a dancefloor

We are very excited to announce the talented Empress Shema aka Shema Yuri will be featured on the Roots Sisters radio show, this Sunday on 1BTN at 10pm - 12am💥

Empress Shema first began playing music in Tokyo in 1999 as a pioneer DJ of UK roots/dub in Japan. She came to London in 2002 and started to learn studio work alongside producing music.

Her very first release was 'Empress Dub' on the King Alpha label in 2007, followed by another two releases.

In 2010 Empress Shema began a collaboration with Chazbo at Conscious Sounds Studio. She released 6 titles on the following labels - Roots Temple, Reggae on Top (with Barry Isaacs) plus Roots Revelation. She also released 3 titles with Ras Iwarriyah on IWA Records.

In 2011 Empress Shema created her own label "Name by Nature Productions", releasing 7 singles with Norris Man, Singer Jah and Chop Chop Productions, between 2012 and 2015

2016 found her releasing Sizzla's "Cold War Remix - Cold Steppers" with Mista Savona on Muti Music (USA) and also releasing 2 titles with Chazbo and Ras Kova on Mametama Records (Japan), Name by Nature Productions.

In 2017 Empress Shema began a collaboration with Dub Judah (Twinkle Brothers) at Dub Jockey Studio, releasing 1 single "It could be nice / Smoke and mirrors and credit cards" on her label. Also releasing 3 titles with Chazbo and Culture Freeman on Emana Sound Records (France), Roots Temple, alongside Roots Youths Records.

In 2018 she released a single called "Manna" with Fikir Amlak (USA) featuring Dub Judah and Empress Shema.

Her future plans include an album with Dub Judah, as well as releases with Chazbo, Art Man plus many more artists, whilst focusing on her record label.

As evidenced by her works, Empress Shema is a force to be reckoned with, bringing heavyweight productions in a serious style. For this broadcast, she'll be joined by the talented Christopher Norrisman Campbell on vocalist duties.

This week on Roots Sisters we're pleased to welcome Lioness Mathilda to the airwaves!

Lioness Mathilda is a selectress, singer and photographer from the North of Spain who has been collecting roots reggae vinyl and photographing events in the scene for more than 7 years.

She is an active member of the feminist collective called What About The Half in Spain (
https://whataboutthehalf.bandcamp.com/) with which she participated together with collectives such as Bass Culture Players and Purple Rockets along with other Spanish artists in the creation of the vinyl "The Reply of the Half".

She is also very involved in promoting the role of women in the reggae scene.

Mother of twin girls, she is currently developing a project called Jimaguas Sound focused on the divulgation of the sound system culture for children and adults.

Anja Siren has been spinning records and organising dub events since the late 90s. In 2008, Siren Sisters started hosting regular sessions in the Munich area – often inviting guests from all over
the world, especially female artists. Siren Sisters' selection focus on mystical wake-up tunes with a strong message of love & unity – from the finest roots to the heaviest steppers to rare dubplates.

Her sessions pinpoint gender & racial injustice and environmental challenges still leaving hope and upliftment and making everyone feel safe and welcome. For her powerful live sets, she is often
accompanied by the Ecuador-born singer MC TREASURE IRIE on the mic.

Anja also contributes regularly to the German RIDDIM magazine with articles about sound system culture. She is also involved in the organization of major german festivals and events such as Rootsbase on Fusion Festival, Rootsbase Festival and Dubimpuls to name a few. In 2019, she found the female sound collective Lioness Awake.

Siren Sisters played shows in Berlin, Leipzig, Hamburg, Munich, Prague, Ljubljana, Wiener, Neustadt, Basel, just to name a few and streamed on platforms worldwide. She spoke on the panel for Soundsystem Outernational at Goldsmiths University London and won the renowned Tassilo price.
