When caterpillars go through metamorphosis to become butterflies, they essentially liquefy in their cocoon. Wild right?!

That's why I was so surprised to find out that butterflies retain ✨ memories ✨ from when they were caterpillars.

It's always felt to me - that one being had to cease to exist in order for the other to come to be.

I have started to think about the work that I do through Hilandel. As a self funded artist, it's difficult to not always see my ideas come to fruition. I can get into an "all or nothing" mindset.

So instead, in a time that feels like a new beginning, I am trying to be curious about what will be metamorphosing.

🪡 Fittings: Not the most glamorous✨ part of the custom process but definitely the most important. Although, this part may not be as romantic💕 as putting on the final look, or even picking out your fabric, it may feel the most special🥰.

That is because, for most people, it's the first time they've ever had something made just for them, and their unique body. It's a very different experience wearing something made just for you and for YOU to be considered in every detail.

The Hilandel Willow Skirt is created using our special “Made to Measure” process and takes 1-2 weeks plus shipping. Each piece is made one at a time with your unique measurements. We ask you to be patient as we aim to deliver perfection.

The Willow Skirt is created with our special “Made to Measure” process, this is a peak inside what custom pieces are all about. To start, you will select a color. Each piece has a unique tone created by overlapping a minimum of two different colors to create our custom hues. ( If you don’t see the color your craving, contact us and let’s chat!) Next, and most importantly, come the measurements. During the checkout process you will get instructions on how to take your measurements properly. If something looks off, we will reach out to confirm.

[NEW ✨ ON ✨ THE ✨ BLOG]
🎀There are many places that I find inspiration and although I wouldn’t go as far as to call myself a film buff, but I do love TV and movies. Or maybe it would be more accurate to say there are some special pieces of television and film I’ve become truly infatuated with.

🎀Rewind to 2006 when I was 20 years old and Sofia Coppola comes out with the movie Marie Antonette, a film which I can only describe as ABSOLUTE VISUAL DECADENCE.

🎀Rewind further to 1990, 16 years before the release of Marie Antonette when I was 4 years old. Madonna performs her new hit song “Vogue” on the MTV Video Music Awards.

🎀These depictions for me were such a moment for the female gaze and symbolized the push and pull that I think most women experience being caught in a double bind.

Hi 👋 I am Hillary the Founder and Designer at Hilandel.

I have always loved fashion but have also always respected the function of clothing.

Design for me started around the age of 12 out of the need to be resourceful. I would look at the clothes in my closet that were out of style or no longer fit me. Where some people might just get rid of these things, I would imagine how I could modify them to make something that felt fresh.

I couldn’t afford to buy the cool, trendy thing so I would figure out a way to create the look out of what I already had.

What started from necessity developed into skill and passion. It was a lot of deconstruction and experimenting.

I love to reinvent my clothes to this day. When I am not working on custom pieces for my clients I creating my own clothing. I would love to one day be known for wearing only my own creations and of course my collection of vintage gems 💎.

This is a Hilandel signature: we call it "Whisper" as in "having a ✨whisper✨ of green." 🤫

Depending on the light and movement, the color appears more💙 or less🩵saturated. Sometimes appearing almost white🤍 and other times coming through more intensely.

Our signature "whisper" is something I spend a lot of time developing to make perfect. It's something unique to Hilandel that we don't see anyone else copying (yet 🫠)

Hilandel Bride, Michelle is a social butterfly and knew when it came time for her party to pop off 🍾 she would want to move! So, in true Cali girl fashion, we switched out her ball skirt and heels for shorts and sandals - two seamless looks made possible by a ✨ Hilandel Signature ✨ ... a sneaky 🤫 bodysuit acting as the top for both!! 🤍

It all starts with a sketch ✍️ . I love that this is a form of communication that transcends language. No matter what we are trying to describe, when words aren't enough, someone inevitably grabs a pen and paper and creates a visual. The biggest compliment I get time and time again from my brides is "it looks exactly like the sketch!" Which to me means I've not only met their expectations but I've created a full circle moment for them where the promise of *trust the process* - delivers!

I want to talk for a second about "inspiration" or in this case in-spore-ation (pun intended)

When it seems like the whole world is running head first towards AI - I am just over here marveling at the underside of a mushroom. Nature is so incredible in it's colors and shapes. In my opinion, there is really nothing AI can generate that wouldn't be topped by the incredible beauty that's already growing out of the earth. The gills of mushrooms are so beautiful to me and another example of one of my favorite things: undulating shapes.

Have you met Eloise, the H.B.I.C [head bitch in charge 😉] of Hilandel? Taking after her namesake [Eloise at the Plaza] she is adventurous and very particular. Although she has a bias toward French Fashion - she still helps out around the studio using her keen nose to sniff out the best materials for our brides... that is when she's not falling asleep on the job.

The Willow Skirt is cut from 9 layers of tulle. Each piece has a unique tone created by overlapping two to three different colors to create our custom hues. The delicate silk waistband complements the color of the garment and has an invisible zipper closure at the back. Each skirt is lined with silk charmeuse for coverage that feels silky smooth against the skin. The Willow Skirt falls to a knee/midi length and flows beautifully as you move.
