Happy International Women’s Day!

The aim of the IWD 2023 campaign theme is to get the world talking about Why equal opportunities aren't enough. People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action.

As we wrap up Black History month, we are also wrapping up our list of Black movers and shakers that we’ve been sharing all month long.

Today we highlight Canada’s first and only Black Governor-General, Michaëlle Jean.

Michaëlle Jean was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. At age 11, her family arrived in Canada as refugees.

They were escaping a cruel leader in her homeland. Life in Canada was difficult at first. She lived with her mother and sister in a small basement apartment in Montreal.

Michaëlle Jean worked hard in school, and even learned to speak five languages! She became a popular journalist.

On August 4, 2005, she was appointed Governor-General of Canada. That is the Queen's representative in Canada. She is the first Black Canadian to hold the position.

She served from 2005 - 2010.

Today, we’re highlighting Black Inventor- Garrett Morgan.

In 1923 Morgan invented the Three-Light Traffic Signal.

With only an elementary school education, Morgan came up with several significant inventions, including an improved sewing machine and the gas mask.

But, one of Morgan's most influential inventions was the improved traffic light. Morgan's was one of the first three-light systems that were invented in the 1920s, resulting in widespread adoption of the traffic lights we take for granted today.

Today we tip our hats to the first female self-made millionaire in America, Madam CJ Walker.

In 1867, a child was born to former slaves in Louisiana. They named her Sarah Breedlove who later became Madam CJ Walker.

As an adult, Walker suffered from hair loss due to a scalp condition, and she began to make cures for herself. She recognized an opportunity in the lack of hair products for Black Americans on the market at the time.

She would eventually come to own a major corporation, Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company. Under its auspices, she trained hundreds of beauticians. The company became an icon in Black communities across the country.

Walker’s success was a classic example of finding a gap in a market that had been overlooked by the business elite of the time.

In terms of net worth, Madam Walker was worth about $600,000. In today's terms, that would be roughly $8 million.

Madam C. J. Walker and others like her inspire me as an entrepreneur with the sheer determination it took to not only address a need that was deliberately overlooked, but to achieve the level of success to provide means and opportunity for others.

When we think of Black excellence, we think of Dr. Chika Stacy Oriuwa.

Resident doctor in psychiatry at the University of Toronto and one of Time magazine’s “2021 Next Generational Leaders” Dr. Oriuwa is a medical trailblazer spearheading change in healthcare and beyond.

In 2021, she was honoured with a doll Barbie doll made in her likeness, as part of campaign honouring health-care workers who participated in the fight against COVID-19. Dr. Oriuwa was the sole Canadian honouree.

Dr. Oriuwa was selected by Mattel for her work as advocate against systemic racism in health care.

In 2020, Oriuwa was selected to address her graduating class at University of Toronto, becoming the first Black woman selected to be the standalone valedictorian in the program’s history.

She is also an accomplished physician, spoken word poet, and advocate for racialized and marginalized populations.

Black excellence, ingenuity and perseverance is not just the month of February but influences me all year long.

But, for Black History Month, we will be taking some time to celebrate, showcase and be inspired by the contributions of Black people around the globe.

First on our list is National Inventors Hall of Famer, Dr. Marian Croak who
holds more than 200 patents!

Many of us often rely on Skype, Zoom, Google Meet and other teleconferencing services for meetings.

I know I definitely do, especially during the pandemic when meeting in person was a challenge.

It also allows me to broaden my reach and be even more accessible to my clients, team and colleagues.

So while the name Dr. Marian Croak may not be a familiar one, the technology she created definitely is.

Dr. Croak is probably best known for developing VOIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol, the technology that converts your voice into a digital signal , allowing users to make a call directly from their computer or other digital devices.

Born in 1955 and raised in New York City, Dr. Croak was inspired to pursue a STEM career after her father built her a home chemistry set.

She was inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame in 2013 and the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2022.

She holds degrees from Princeton University and USC and held positions at AT & T, Bell Labs and presently Google where as a Vice President in the engineering group she also works on racial justice efforts encouraging women and young girls in the field of engineering.

Setting out on this solo journey was a hard decision, but it was one I needed to make.
It’s been a lot of highs and equal amount of lows, but I am superbly grateful I took a chance on myself.

Everyday, I get to do what I love and because I’m the face of the business, ever so often, I get dolled up and channel my inner model for brand photoshoots.

Thanks to for collaborating with me on this shoot.

I’ll be sharing the photos every chance I get.

I am still basking in the amazing energy that my team and the vendors and attendees experienced this past Saturday at the Black Queens of Durham Holiday pop-up event in Ajax.

Huge shout out to Asha and Fatim for providing much needed space and an overall positive vibe for the vendors to showcase their products and services to the hundreds of attendees that walked the market floor.

Your vision for this day, to encourage and highlight the need for an open market for the skillful and talented business owners in our community, was achieved and well received.

Congratulations to you and the Black Queens of Durham group who, in celebrating their 5th anniversary, prove why you are such a positive and inspiring force in Durham Region.

Congratulations also to all the amazing vendors who showed up and showed out at the event.

For those who weren’t able to make it out to the event, please encourage these vendors and show them love with your support.

Partnering in the planning and coordination of this event was pure joy. Celebrating Black excellence and sharing it with the broader community is what drives me to do what I love to do. More of this please!

Lies. Myth & Misconceptions.

If I got a dollar for every time I’m going old that event planning is glamorous and all event planners do is party, I’d be Jeff Besos.

The truth is that like most other jobs, is hard work. It has its perks, but the hours are long and it’s A LOT of work!!

Loving what I do makes it worth the while.

What lies have you heard about event planners? Share them in the comments.

Being constantly on the go to service my clients is always a great time, but I always remind myself that I cannot pour from empty an cup.

Reading is one of the many many things I do to fill up my cup and refuel.

Save this for when you start doubting your ability to overcome the challenges and ‘win the week.’

It's World Gratitude Day and there's so much we have to be thankful for, but for today, our number one thing is the gift of life.

As long as we have life, eveything else becomes possible.

What are you thankful for?
