In the world of artist books, publishers make a promotional piece as a sneak preview of the book. And sometimes it is sold to be able to finance the edition of the artist book. This is our version for Alfarera. The artist book I made in collaboration with and @
alicia__marquez
Based on that idea we letterpress this “souvenir card” as a gift to all our teachers and classmates.

In The Weeds
The term “w**d” has a broad and a mutable meaning: a w**d is any plant that’s growing where it doesn’t belong. Ever since we started cultivating plants, we have tried to suppress w**ds. But some w**ds have been found to be beneficial, having medicinal, nutritional, ecological,
aesthetic uses. The former w**d becomes the crop, or the herb, or the decorative element.
Collective 62 presents “In the Weeds,” a collaboration between Donna Ruff, Deryn Cowdy, and
Catalina Rojas, an exhibition focusing on these undervalued, sometimes maddeningly resilient
plants. Unused land on site is being turned into a meadow garden, allowing flowering w**ds to grow and mature. Using this as a canvas, a meandering path will allow visitors to appreciate the
complexity and micro-culture of the uncultivated field.
The three artists are showing work that captures the beauty and complexity of w**ds through
disparate means.

DAY36
PAPER JUNGLE
Luna Paiva created a full scale paper jungle installation at the Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach. I was invited to collaborate with Luna to design the VIP gifts. She sent me a couple of her sketches and I designed and built a small diorama of the large scale installation. We did 200 pieces signed and numbered by the artist!

DAY25

PRINTING A MESSAGE ONE BY ONE!
invited me to collaborate with mexican artists@_pedro_reyes_ and ernandez. Pedro wanted me to convey a political message, from my letterpress machine! A map in the shape of Central America, contained the dates of all the american military invasions from the 19th century until today. The texts became very small because there has been too many invasions in Central America to hold in one map. I proposed to divide the texts in two maps, as well as colors for ink and paper. I recreated my studio for printing. I brought one of my letterpress machines to the show, my essential tools and furniture. And there I was printing one by one to deliver his political message, it was subtle and beautiful. The stand looked colorful like a candy store, but once you understood the massage behind, it was a very powerful statement!

• Thank you for your generous collaboration your paper is awesome !!

DAY18
SOUTH FLORIDA FARMERS MARKET ON PAPER

Edible Magazine has one issue every 4 months, they take pride on the covers of their magazine and every issue is created by a different artist. I was approached to design the cover of the last issue of the year. Interested on shapes and shadows I built a paper cutout and blind letterpress version, my own interpretation of a South florida Farmers market.

DAY17
DESIGNING WITH A MOTTO IN MIND.
The inspiration for this invitation was the Company Motto: Collaboration, Communication, Connection, Compassion. As one of the requirement, I thought it was attractive to blind deboss on the 4 sides of envelope. And the second requirement was that the invitation needed to reflect the clean lines of their Corporate Headquarters.

DAY16
A MEMORABLE GIFT
This project has a special place in my heart! It was a dream project that allowed me to be connected to Chile in a professional way. I was involved in the beginning connecting a team of professionals and at the end designing a memorable keepsake gift.
The Copperbridge foundation + AIA invited me to Chile to scout iconic architectural locations and to introduce them to key professionals that where able to help organize their annual architectural travel abroad. All eyes where set on Chile because architect Alejandro Aravena had won the Pritzker Architecture Prize the year before. My very good friend, chilean photographer Isabel Fernandez was commissioned to make the last touch of the trip and to create a gift for each guest based on her photos, a massive work in progress, a journey through the beaches of the Pacific Ocean capturing images with a pin hole camera. The last day, during a lunch event at the , Isabel presented her artwork as a solo artist. Isabel commissioned me to create a folder for her photos. Remotely, via internet, we designed together this folder that protected the print and also served as a certificate of authentication.

DAY 15
ARTIST’S MENU
Andres Ferrandis, Valencian by essence and local artist was having a private dinner in a gallery space at the Miami Design District and asked me to create his dinner menu. I proposed to use his proofs and discarded pieces from his prints and add them to the menu folder, converting them into something special. A gift with a piece of art that described something about that memorable evening!! We used a heavy chipboard and letterpress all texts in black.

DAY 13
HOLY COMMUNION

There was happiness, beauty and magic in this event! I was asked to custom design and letterpress the communion cards (shown in the first photo) and Rocio liked them so much that I ended up designing all the printed decorative elements of this event. ALL was possible because I collaborated with very talented women!

SALTA LA LINDA
Mechi wanted to celebrate her birthday with her best childhood friends in Salta, Argentina. She wanted more that a birthday, she wanted to invite them on a journey! So I was commissioned to design a keepsake. A box that could contain the memories of their long weekend together. Mechi gave to each friend the empty box upon arrival, and every day they filled it with reflexions, memories, messages and notes to each other. For their last day together, I also designed a game of dreams in a small white box! •

DAY8
MINIATURE CHAIR PROTOTYPE.
This chair is part of the Wing Collection designed by Richard Schultz. I was commissioned to create the miniature version of the chair to be mailed flat in an envelope as a gift. When received you could easily assemble it just by folding it as an origami with simple instructions. I was given the technical drawing of the individual parts of the chair, I pieced them together and scaled them down to be laser cut, I did several samples, and this is my favorite one!

DAY5
SILHOUETTE INVITATION.
This card has been a signature in my portfolio and inspiring for so many other projects! Maria, a very good friend of my brother, asked me to design her 50th Bday invitation 🎂. She wanted something completely different with a caricature and I insisted on using her silhouette.
The result was so undoubtedly her, so María!
The party was in NYC so I incorporated the iconic Brooklyn bridge inside her silo. Maria was so happy with her invitation that she also invited me!!

Happy delayed birthday Maria! 🎈

DAY4
BOOTLEG CHOCOLATES Bahamas.
I have been designing their packaging for many many years now. Bootleg is a mom/daughter company that creates artisanal chocolates. Amanda is in charge of marketing and her mother the creator of shapes and flavors. Amanda tells me the story of her products and I narrate them thru their packaging! I have a lot of freedom to propose ideas, concepts and different materials, which allows us to keep it fresh and with that element of surprise! 🎡

DAY3
A FASHION WEDDING 👰🏼🎩
Modern luxury magazine invite me to be part of their wedding issue and wanted a fashion Miami Vibe wedding suite. I had the freedom to do whatever I want so I decided to create something inspiring more than budget oriented. I wanted to create new possibilities, keep it elegant, light, inspiring and fun! I designed all the cards in a bright crisp white card stock , and picked a type with a modern Art Deco vibe, letterpress in black ink. (Letterpress adds that tactile element that I love). And also have a nice touch in the text, like the flask with the tag hanging: “ trust me you can dance”
Then, if it is miami, why not a white linen fabric envelope with a handmade bright green tassel? I collaborated with Anna to create a tropical feel with her illustrations for the liners, (inspired by the green garden of ironside). The other cool touch Anna added is that she copied the font style of the cards to hand print the guest address on the envelope.

DAY2. BLACKonBLACK.
A tall, blond handsome man showed up at my studio and said “hi, I want to have a black card with black text”. I said, I can do that, but if you are so daring your thank you notes should be the same! And he agreed! So when done a gave him as a gift a couple of white ink pens!
Later, this project inspired many other projects to come, black on black.
