Big Update - I’m temporarily moving to London!

Starting in July, we will be abroad for the next two years due to my husband’s job. What does this mean for Afton Events? We are wrapping up some weddings this year, and then we’ll be on a bit of a hiatus. I plan to continue posting on here as I have so much that I have yet to share. However, we will not be booking new weddings at this time.

I have spent the last 6 wedding seasons devoting my time and energy to my amazing couples. I am grateful to them, their families, and their friends for letting me be a part of so many special and unforgettable memories. I am honored to have worked with the most incredible venues and vendors in my favorite city in the world. I owe so much to my lovely team - I couldn’t have done any of this without them. This business changed my life. It gave me so much. It has been so unbelievably rewarding.

But now, it’s time to use this opportunity to focus my time and energy on my family. After losing my son this past year, I am due for some healing time off.

I will keep you posted on any and all updates I have regarding resuming business. Chicago, this isn’t a goodbye, it’s a see you later!

I am first and foremost a mother.

Through the morning sickness and long wedding days while pregnant with my daughter…

The emailing from the hospital after giving birth…

The getting as much done as possible while she napped…

The pumping milk in closets and bathrooms on wedding days…

The continuing on with business after I later suffered a miscarriage…

The long wedding days on my feet again while pregnant with my son…

The emails from the NICU after a traumatic birth…

The showing up for my clients after my son’s death…

The continuous juggling act of being a mother to my daughter, a mother grieving her son, a wedding planner, and a business owner…

But I am first and foremost a mother.

I don’t know how to begin showing up here again after losing my son, Hart. I am not the same person I was when I was last here, prior to giving birth to him and prior to losing him at 3 weeks old. That was a person that had not yet been hit with such an enormous tragedy. I have changed. My perspective on life has changed. Pretty much everything has changed.

However, I can honestly say that my belief in what I do being important has not changed. If anything, it is even more meaningful. Some people may think of a wedding planner as spending a lot of money on flowers, music, and food. But I know from my 5 years of running this business, and working with countless couples, that it is so much more than that. It is being a part of one of the most important days of people’s lives. It is starting a new chapter. It is making memories that last a lifetime. It is celebrating all of the good life has to offer. And knowing now how tragedy can change your life in a moment, we better celebrate while we can.

I have always celebrated everything in a big way. Weddings, baby showers, birthdays, you name it - I celebrated it. And now, I’m so glad I did while I could in a completely blissful way. Moving forward, every good moment in life will have a shadow of sadness that my son isn’t here. If you’ve experienced grief, you may understand that feeling. But I will continue to celebrate because I know how important making memories with the people you love is. And despite all of the pain and potential tragedy around the corner, life is worth celebrating. Love is worth celebrating. And celebrate we will. 🤍
