Our 4th honorary speaker is a Professor Of Pathology, Head Department of Pathology at Al-Mouwassat and Al-Assad University Hospital, as well as the President of the Syrian Society of Pathology. In addition, he is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Al-Qalamoun Private University, he has also established the Division of Oncology at the University of Damascus, then became the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, a former Minister of Health, and former Head of the Executive Committee of the WHO. Dr. Eyad Chatty remains one of the most renowned and celebrated physicians in the Syrian medical community, as well as a model and inspiration for many of his students. His life has been crowned with various accomplishments and bestowed with gracious wisdom, which he continues to share to nourish the minds of future generations with his valuable knowledge.

Today's speaker is German artist Heike Webber, who left Germany and navigated through the Middle East, residing currently in Damascus. Heike is heavily immersed in the education of women and attempts to create opportunities for them to have a better future. As an expert in embroidery, she acquires these women the profession and aims to help them be more independent. Heike gained wild popularity over the years for her humanitarian acts and is considered an inspiration and influencer in whole region.

متحدثة اليوم هي هايكه ويبر، فنانة ألمانيّة تقيم في دمشق، اغتربت عن وطنها الأم وقررت التعمّق في الثقافة الشرق أوسطيّة. وجدت هايكه نفسها في مجال تمكين النساء ودعمهنّ، فساهمت في خلق فرص لهنّ تقودهنّ نحو مستقبل أفضل. كخبيرة في فن التطريز، لقنّت النساء هذه المهنة باحترافية، لتضعهنّ على سكة ثابتة لأن يكنّ مستقلّات. نالت هايكة شهرة واسعة نتيجة لعملها الإنساني، وشكّلت رمزاً ملهماً ومؤثراً على مستوى المنطقة بأكملها.

Nevertheless, young Antonio succeeded in representing an optimal example of facing these challenges and choosing the culinary art as a preserved legacy from his country of origin, Syria, all while portraying it in the most amiable of ways.

Today was meant to be the day of TEDx AlFarabi Street's event, inspired by the street sign bearing the numerals 3/14. However, uncontrollable circumstances lead to it being postponed. Yet, the universe had a different kind of celebration in store for us. For today, the world honors the mathematical constant π, a day known as Pi Day, where people indulge in a variety of pies in celebration of this symbol. In recognition of AlFarabi, the great mathematician after whom this street is named, we have chosen to imbue this day with meaning and celebrate Pi Day, as we believe that life can surprise us with new opportunities, even in the face of disappointment and uncertainty. It gives us the chance to savor the simple pleasures in life, like a warm and flaky pie, and find the motivation to plan anew.

When music uplifts the soul, philosophy enriches the mind, and only when you achieve both can you truly understand the human nature; and that is what AlFarabi aimed to do. In spite of having only half of his writings discovered and listed in medieval catalogues, the surviving work allows us to appreciate his stature as an original philosopher, whose accomplishments extend across all fields of thought. Grappled with presenting a turning-point in the history of Islamic philosophical thought, AlFarabi was the first true founder of epistemology which relies upon ‘universal reason’. AlFarabi also painted the heart as an eminent organ, when reached to a specific heat temperature, makes the body function at its very best. Where as the mind or “Aql”, is understood as a faculty of the soul by means of which certainty about universal premises and rational logic is attained.

الموسيقا غذاء الروح والفلسفة غذاء الفكر، وباجتماعهما يتشكل جوهر الوجود الانساني، وحقق الفارابي بمعرفته هذه المعادلة الصعبة. وعلى الرغم من اننا استطعنا العثور على نصف مخطوطاته وكتبه فقط، لكن أعماله التي نجت كانت كافية لإثبات مكانته كفيلسوف حاذق ومفكر تجاوز تفكيره مجالات كثيرة. شكل الفارابي علامة فارقة في تاريخ الفكر الفلسفي الإسلامي، وكان أول مؤسس لنظرية المعرفة التي تعتمد على “العقل الكونيّ”. رسم الفارابي القلب كمركز هام، حينما يصل إلى درجة حرارة معينة، يجعل الجسم في حالته المثلى. بينما كان عنده العقل هو مسكن الروح التي يتم بواسطتها الوصول إلى اليقين حيث يتحقق المنطق العقلاني والتفكير الكوني.

While we can all agree that music entails within its folds a magical element that engulfs its avid listeners, it was AlFarabi that lifted and enriched this field by the invention of an instrument that emits a rather bright, uplifting tone that settles deep within the soul. It’s known as The Piano of The East: Al-Qanun. Furthermore, he discussed the therapeutic effects of music on the mind and was the author of ‘Ketab Almusiqi Alkabir’ where he talked about the philosophy of music and the art of crafting instruments. After all, AlFarabi was the man responsible making people weep or laugh at will whenever he picked the strings of his instrument!
