I initially uploaded this "radio edit" reswizzle some 9 years ago and during a recent rare trip to Soundcloud land, I spotted a 'remaster' option (which you have to pay for, natch). I've spent the best part of £4.99 on doing that very thing to this Section 25 track which, in its original form on the album Dark Light (produced by Derek Miller), is already superb. Now it sounds even better imo. Less top-end and 'thumpy' (technical term). I hope Vincent approves. It's not vastly different, just shorter and now a little sharper. I still imagine it getting a spin on radio somewhere - maybe The Stanley Muggins Show or Fran Carlyon could take up the idea!

It's Graham Massey's birthday today. Here's an 808 State track I always thought would have made a brilliant single. Orbit, taken from Gorgeous, has that same upbeat positivity previously demonstrated on Lift, Leo Leo and Pacific.

Another great music name has passed, this time Pat Collier who produced and worked with Jesus and Mary Chain, Vi*****rs, The Wonderstuff, The House of Love, Robyn Hitchcock, New Model Army, Mighty Lemon Drops etc.
He had a tenuous Plymouth connection actually - he produced local band The Retreat's studio album Providence Street (named after a Greenbank road). It flew under the radar and by the time this album appeared in 1996, The Retreat were being overtaken by Britpop and the like. But as there's no You Tube/stream upload of that album, it's over to New Model Army to demonstrate the sparkle Collier brought to the mix -

Sad to read of The Chills' founder Martin Phillips death earlier. The first Chills songs I heard were covers by other bands. The House of Love had a go at this in 1991 and slipped it onto the b-side of the (admittedly marvellous) The Girl With the Loneliest Eyes. It's a song about a bad dream, not autobiographical and remains one of the eeriest hits in their NZ homeland. They didn't quite crossover in the UK (their Dunedin counterparts Crowded House did), but came close with the wonderful bubblegum tune Heavenly Pop Hit. But Pink Frost is another level -

I have had in my possession a mystery blank acetate 10" for a few years and mercifully I didn't put it into storage - it's probably not anyone's cup of tea on here but given that Go West, Climie Fisher and Tears For Fears et all scored similar big hits, I'll proclaim that this should have joined them in 1987/8 - If only the intro was shorter and the fade slightly later, it could have done it.
The wonders of Google and Discogs narrowed things down. This is the promo 12" and I can't help thinking Claudia (Propaganda) would make a great cover of this for xPropaganda with a Stephen Lipson remix.

The Devo, Badly Drawn Boy, Electric Six, Cult featured pics form Batch 1 (over 40 discs), Eminem + Talib Kweli form Batch 2 (22 discs), Green Day etc is Batch 3 (12 discs) then the remaining two with Queen and Madonna pics form Batch 4 (30).

Not exactly a 'rock and roll' announcement but I'm looking forward to seeing China Crisis for the first time in May. A local venue too. I still think this remains one of their finest. Issued on the LP Working With Fire and Steel (their second and the one with Wishful Thinking on it), Soul Awakening closes out the album in a drowsy trippy haze of melancholia, dressed up as AOR. They weren't the cool kids on the block by any means but apparently nowadays they put on a jolly show laced with sharp Scouse humour...

What a soundtrack!
I picked this up from Rough Trade some time ago for £15 in their sale in 2022(?). Never got round to even opening it at the time but today’s the day. Perfect working music but as with other Badalamenti scores, unsettling and eerie. The film was panned but I still stand by it.

Espiritu. Initially formed of vocalist and songwriter Vanessa Quinones and former Frazier Chorus musician Chris Taplin, things looked good for the Anglo-french/south American outfit with a string of minor hits and an album in the pipeline. However, for whatever reason, Always… ended up being issued in Japan only and despite a second album being recorded with Taplin, Quinones’ impact on the UK scene dwindled. The second album was promoted as Number One, then name-changed to Another Life and preceded by the rather tame single Baby I Wanna Live so no wonder it nose-dived. There’s even a Guy Called Gerald mix on it (plus dnb versions across several singles).
It’s the first album that’s worth picking up. A woozy funky downbeat combo of English/Spanish language with input from Nellee Hooper, Mick Talbot and Chris Bangs and supporting remixes from Gang Starr, Sabres of Paradise and Underdog across various promos, how could it have failed? Songs were good so I guess it’s down to taste and impetus.
