VENUE ISSUES POSTPONES ST. PAUL BOXING EVENT

A professional boxing event scheduled for Aug. 3 in St. Paul, Minn., has been postponed due to confusion surrounding the venue.

Extreme Maximus Boxing and Big Q Promotions had scheduled “Return to the Capital” at the Oscar Johnson Arena. The venue, an indoor hockey facility, was being sub-leased and promoters were assured food and alcohol could be sold at the event.

As the event was less than a month away, promoters became suspicious of the promises made by the person sub-leasing the venue. After challenging whether alcohol or even food could be sold, it took two weeks before promoters were informed that Ramsey County, which oversees the property, would not allow either food or alcohol to be sold or even brought into the venue. While deciding whether to do the show without concessions, promoters were informed the venue was no longer available.

Efforts to find an alternate venue on such a short timeline did not produce any viable options and promoters decided on July 24 that they had no choice but to postpone the show.

Promoters expressed regret on having to postpone the event, but promise to locate a better-suited venue soon and reschedule the event, offering fighters who were scheduled the opportunity to fight on the new date.

St Paul native Slink Proper returns to the boxing ring this weekend as he faces Nic Ali Walsh – the grandson of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. Proper handed Ali Walsh his only defeat back in August of 2023 and in the upcoming rematch, he’s out to prove his victory last year was no fluke.

Brian Houston of Omaha, Neb., will fight tonight in the main event at the Motor City Casino in Detroit.

Houston (5-1-1) is promoted by Extreme Maximus Boxing and will face hometown standout Derick Miller (16-0) in an 8-round fight for the American Boxing Federation cruiserweight title.

MINNESOTA'S AKALE GETS HIS CHANCE IN THE BOXING SPOTLIGHT

For boxing prospect Sona Akale, fighting on ESPN with the potential of 71 million viewers, is like a dream come true.

But he isn’t taking time to celebrate.

“I actually had a feeling I would get here, but I’m trying to stay in the moment and treat this like any other fight,” Akale said. “I’m still in the gym all the time and I just keep getting better and better. I will be at my very best for this fight.”

Akale, a Saint Paul, Minn., resident, is fighting on the main card of a Bob Arum Top Rank pro boxing event on June 29 at James L. Knight Center in Miami Beach, Fla. His opponent is Nico Ali Walsh, the grandson of legendary champion Muhammad Ali.

Both fighters sport a 9-1 record, but Akale, known as “Slink Proper,” owns an upset victory over Walsh last year in Tulsa, Okla.

Scott Tolzmann of Extreme Maximus Boxing Promotions, negotiated the 6-round rematch with Top Rank matchmakers. Tolzmann, a promoter and matchmaker, has partnered with promoter Monte Cox to produce 20 events in 5 years around the Midwest.

Akale trains at Element Boxing Gym in Saint Paul, Minn., with trainer Shane Chanslor and manager Quincy Caldwell.

Tolzmann also negotiated the first Akale-Walsh fight and was criticized by people who thought Akale was being put in over his head. But Tolzmann had confidence in Akale.

“Scott has been there for me since the beginning … he’s my guy,” Akale said. “He actually cares about me as a person, not just as a fighter. Scott does his thing and gets things done. He’s straight forward and an all-around good guy.”

Another tremendous performance last night in Detroit, MI with all complements to Tray Martin as he lost a “razor” thin split decision to 2021 USA National Champion Justin Lacey-Pierce!

Tray had Lacey-Pierce hurt on multiple occasions and almost down in the 5th. In which Lacey-Pierce lost his mouthpiece, referee retrieved it, and finally the cornerman “skillfully” dropped it again 😉. Of course this gave ample time for his opponent’s recovery.

Nonetheless, great fight and performance by both athletes.

What’s even more remarkable, is Tray never had one official amateur boxing match. He is a remarkable mixed (MMA, KB, Boxing) combative sports athlete!!

Tray’s last (3) opponents have had a combined record of 16-1, in which Tray lost a close decision, draw, and split decision, ALL in opponent’s home towns 😉.

Tray will continue to be very busy, as he drops in weight from 160lbs down to 140lbs and boxes in MO March 30th and then April 27th in Cedar Rapids, IA.

LeConte, Loffer headline April 27 event on at Teamsters Hall

Mitchell LeConte, the undefeated super featherweight from Cedar Rapids, will look to notch his 9th professional victory when he battles Terrance Lee of Texas in the main event of Extreme Maximus Boxing's "Brawl at the Hall" on April 27 at the Teamsters Union Hall in Cedar Rapids.

LeConte (8-0-1) is the USA Mid America Super Featherweight and Lightweight champion.

In the co-main event, Derek Loffer of Cedar Rapids will face unbeaten Joe Bentalha of Madison, Wis. in a professional kickboxing match.

Another standout on the card is Kenny Davis Jr. (11-2-1) of Reno, Nev. Davis has won 11 straight bouts and holds the World Boxing Association's NABA Silver title.

Other top fighters include: Kahlil Smoot (9-3) of Ocala, Fla.; Shawn West (7-4-1) of Davenport, Iowa; and Enrique Uvalle (3-2) of Des Moines.

Other local fighters include boxers Micah Youngbear of Tama; Tommy Ahrens of Fort Dodge; and Dominic Martin of Davenport. Area kickboxers include: Anthony Thomas of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Helio Ortiz of Tama.

ZUNIGA PUTS TITLE ON THE LINE SATURDAY NIGHT AT MVP/DSM SPORTS IN DES MOINES
It's been more than a year and a half since Diego Zuniga has fought in his hometown of Des Moines. The undefeated prospect has built a 6-0 record, while claiming the USA Mid American welterweight crown in the process.

On Saturday night at the MVP/DSM Sports Complex, Zuniga will face his toughest test to date when he takes on Jake Robinson (6-2-2) of Kansas City in an 8-round main event.

Extreme Maximus Boxing presents "Veterans Day" which features 16 bouts. Doors open at 5 p.m. with the first fight at 6 p.m. Tickets are available online at Nitrotickets.com or at the door the night of the event.

"It's an honor to fight on Veterans Day," Zuniga said. "I have the utmost respect for all the men and women who serve in our Military to protect our freedom."

Robinson admits it a crucial fight for his career.

"It's a big opportunity for me," Robinson said. "At this stage of my career it's really big. I'm 30, so I probably only have five more years competing at a high level. I don't have a lot of time."

Zuniga won the Mid America title in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, six months ago with a first-round TKO of Shawn West. This will be his first defense.

"If I'm being honest, I'm looking for a great performance," Robinson said. "I realize he is good ... he's 6-0, so obviously he's good. But I'm looking to go to Iowa and show what I can do. He hasn't faced anybody like me and I probably haven't faced anybody like him."

In his last four bouts, Robinson is 3-0-1 with a big win over Alcibiade Duran, who was 9-2.

The card features many of the area's top fighters, like Johnny Case (4-0), Manny Colon (2-0), Sean Frank (1-0) and Ruben Garcia (1-0). Other locals include: brothers Enrique Uvalle and Edgar Uvalle, DeAndrew Jones and Ernesto Hernandez.

Out-of-town standouts include Leo Medel (7-0), Traevon Kroger (5-0), Juan Campos Medina (2-0), Ryan Montag (1-0) and Kahlil Smoot (8-3).

"I'm happy with where we are right now, but I know we are just getting started," Zuniga said. "I'm putting my all into this, so I can look back at the end of my career and say I have no regrets.

"I see my opponent as an 8-0 guy and won't underestimate him at all.I think I've worked harder at this camp than ever before. And I know things will get a lot harder."

EXTREME MAXIMUS BOXING RETURNS TO DES MOINES NOV. 11 ON 'VETERANS DAY'

When we decided to return to Des Moines, matchmaker Scott Tolzmann said: "We have to make it a special event."

First, we are holding the event on Nov. 11, which is "Veteran's Day." We will have some special tickets for our vets. We also have a new venue. The newly renovated MVP/DSM complex at 4600 Park Avenue provides an excellent place for Extreme Maximus Boxing's 16th event in three years.

Doors open at 5 p.m. with the first fight at 6 p.m. Tickets are available from participating fighters; online at Nitrotickets.com; or at the MVP/DSM the night of the event.

Well, we are a little over 4 weeks away and the lineup is looking very special.

Starting with the main event: Diego Zuniga (6-0) of Des Moines will defend his USA Mid American welterweight title against Jake Robinson (6-2-2) of Kansas City, Mo.

There are certain aspects of the fight game that are extremely difficult on multiple fronts…Even that which makes you question your sanity at times lol.
