Ahoy, mates!
First, we want to thank everyone whoโs shown excitement about Corsairโs Name Day! This event was dreamed up as a fun, pirate-themed birthday bash to celebrate one of our founding crew membersโpurely about swashbuckling merriment, friendship, and the love of music. But as much as pirates love a bit of chaos, we want to take a moment to address some concerns raised by the community.
We understand that Corsairโs Name Day coincides with January 26th, a date with significant and complex history in Australia. For many, this day is a time of mourning and reflection. While we didnโt choose the date to align with that event, we get how it can feel like an unintentional overlap.
Now, onto the pirate theme itself. Pirates, while being historically dodgy characters, represent to us a spirit of rebellion, creativity, and community (plus, who doesnโt love an eyepatch and treasure hunt?). We assure you, our event is not intended to glorify colonialism or invasion. Pirates were many things, but nationalistic colonisers they were not.
Lastly, we invite everyone to join us in shaping this event to better reflect shared values of inclusivity, fun, and mutual respect. Your input matters to us as we evolve from a simple birthday party to something more meaningful.
So letโs celebrate together, not just with rum and sea shanties, but with a deeper awareness of the day and its impact. Weโll be hosting a moment of acknowledgment and reflection during the event to honour the significance of January 26th and commit to doing better.
Thank you for sharing your perspectives, and letโs work together to make Corsairโs Name Day a celebration that everyone can feel good about.
Yours in fair winds and full sails,
The Corsair Sound Crew.
