My Top 10 Albums of 2024 (in no particular order!) 🏆

1/10 ‘Tom Noble Presents: House of Spirits’ by Tom Noble on - 15 years or more in the making, but well worth the wait..proper disco with a big Brit-Funk twang.

2/10 ‘Malegría’ by on - I’ve played so many tracks from this out all year, and it never gets old. So happy we got to see her live in Barcelona.

3/10 ‘Mid Spiral’ by on - a deep psychedelic jazz journey of chaos, order and growth. These guys are such masters of their craft.

4/10 ‘Is There Love In Outer Space?’ by & on - where has Jimmy been all my life? In space making amazing cosmic funk, that’s where.

5/10 ‘Blue Desert’ by on - Jack creates such a beautifully nostalgic, intriguing atmosphere, what a fitting name for the album.

6/10 ‘Chorus’ by on - somehow they just get better and better.

7/10 ‘Cool Cool’ by on - James has got soullllll and a beautiful voice, and this album is incredibly dynamic. Lovely tribute to the island too.

8/10 ‘Future Pasts’ by on - sunny, uplifting, infectious melodies throughout.

9/10 ‘Curyman II’ by on - love his take on samba, and the way he celebrates his country’s diverse cultural roots, which are what make Brazilian music so special.

10/10 ‘Bamboo Night’ by Albinos on - I don’t know why I keep associating this album with some kind of mysterious forest 😆 but I’m going to stick with it. Love how minimal it is. Something you can equally chill and groove to.

1/5 ‘Mind Games’ by Roland Haynes Jr. & Phenix on - Deeeeep, Brilliant, 80s Jazz Funk

2/5 ‘Erube Jambo’ by Unity on - big Cymande vibes here, plus wonky synths that go weeeeooowwwwww. Thank you for the tip!

3/5 ‘Musique Originale De Films (Volume 2)’ by Ahmed Malek on - Magical cinematic stuff from Algeria’s very own Ennio Morricone

4/5 ‘Fuego’ by Columna De Fuego on Black Pearl Records - banging Colombian funk that sounds exactly as it should given that cover

5/5 ‘Changes’ by (also!) on - Mega 90s Manchester street soul with catchy, throbbing basslines. What’s really special about both albums on this list is that most of the music had not previously been released anywhere….kind of mad when you think of how much incredible music there is out there that still hasn’t been discovered! Thank you for bringing these sonic gems to life!

1/5 ‘Fred Spider presents Chakalaka Jazz’ on - beautiful South African jazz compiled by the digger behind

2/5 & ._.the._.record present Tangent on - such a wide range of outrageously good music here. One of the best pound for pound comps I’ve ever come across.

3/5 Elsewhere CC by on - full of oddball gems like Harry Panday’s ‘Love your mother and father’.

4/5 ‘Everything above the Sky / Astral travelling with on - your perfect winter chill soundtrack

5/5 ‘Disco é Cultura, Vol. 2’ on - beautiful and bouncy Brazilian funk / soul / boogie

Winter Listening ❄️

1/10 ‘Mid Spiral’ by on - Can’t recommend this highly enough, love their blend of psychedelic jazz, neo-soul, hip hop, funk etc. I think it’s their best work yet.

2/10 ‘Everything Above The Sky - Astral Travelling with on prepare for some deep reflection and heavy chin stroking. Vinyl only but well worth the investment, a stunning selection.

3/10 ‘Mind Games’ by Roland Haynes Jr And Phenix on one of those really special previously unreleased jazz funk boogie gems.

4/10 ‘Bamboo Night’ by Albinos on enter the mysterious deep lofi electronic bamboo forest…thank you for the tip.

5/10 ‘Blue Desert’ by on currently touring in Europe with upcoming UK dates, catch him if you can!

6/10 ‘The Voice Of Love’ compiled by Michael Patricola on another winner from this amazing label.

7/10 ‘Japanese Psychedelic Funk’ by Gofret Band on neck snapping funk of the highest order.

8/10 ‘Tokyo Riddim Vol. 2 1979-1986’ on - has put together a new band featuring some of the original artists..would love to see that!

9/10 ‘Pica-Pau’ by on a super minimal, gentle, dreamy soundscape.

10/10 ‘Giorgos Katsaros’ on awesome compilation of this lovely old Greek Rebetiko.

Thank you everyone who came to The Desert Island listening party in the campo 🐪✨

It was such a lovely evening, and playing records on the prototype was really fun, totally different to anything I’ve experienced before.

The great thing about the Halo (the big white flying saucer attached to the ceiling 🛸) is that the sound really doesn’t travel, which is perfect for an island where things are constantly being shut down due to noise restrictions. The sound quality will only get better over time, and I’m sure there will be a huge demand for it in the future.

Special extra thank you to the hard working people who put the event together, for organising everything, Ali for hosting us in his beautiful home, for all the amazing photos, and .usagi & .xabi.chef for the delicious food.

1/10 ‘Is there love in outer space?’ by & on - a wonderful journey through Jimi’s cosmic soul, ‘what are you doing’ is one of my tunes of the year

2/10 ‘Erube Jambo’ by Unity, brilliant reissue here by with some incredible South African 80s funk, psychedelic moog vibes in all the right places

3/10 ‘Mi Latinoamérica sufre’ by the gets better with each listen. Banging wonky cumbia drizzled with some sunny Highlife guitar

4/10 ‘Tangent’ from & ._.the._.record on amazing compilation - ridiculous amount of mega tunes on here..including the mad zouk desert blues crossover ‘Amek Amek’

5/10 ‘Brainwashing’ by .u.g.h.b on - laid back, sunny, relaxing psychedelic soul, not too dissimilar to BadBadNotGood

6/10 ‘Ahmed Malek - Musique Originale De Films (Volume 2)’ on - showcasing the depth of Algerian composer, with nods to bossa nova, reggae and much more

7/10 ‘Disco é Cultura, Vol. 2’ on - one side 70s, the other 80s, both full of Brazilian disco magic. My fav new artist name is Tony Bizarro (and for some reason I have to say it in a Scouse accent)

8/10 ‘Africa Yonti’ by - perfectly soothing desert blues from the ever reliable

9/10 ‘Island Boogie’ from on - Been bouncing around the house to this since it came out on Friday. Big cosmic boogie, can’t wait to play this on a proper system!

Time to show some love to the amazing talent behind the Artwork for the EP - my Japanese chicken aka .usagi ⚡️

This wonderful woman is one of the hardest working people I’ve ever met, and is blessed with an immense array of creative talents. Her beautiful illustrations and designs take shape in diverse forms, from restaurant / shop window decorations to T-shirts, logos, branding, flyers, cover artwork and clothing patterns. She also happens to be an excellent cook - just go and taste some of the delights that she’s been creating with her colleagues in the kitchen at 😋

But back to the matter at hand - the artwork for The Desert Island. I was so happy with what she did for my single ‘Asafeer Portixol’ last year...it was always going to be a tough act to follow! And with it being my first EP, the pressure was on! But she rose to it and then some. What was extra special about this was that we kind of sketched the initial idea together in this fun B2B drawing game we have. And I just explained the ideas and the feeling behind it, and she did a beautiful job of it. When she finished it, I was listening to the music and staring at it for ages in total wonder, lost in this little world she had created. 🐪✨

I could not have finished my EP without the help of this legendary humanoid James Rial aka and one half of 🙏

Jamie was the engineer, the man who played the vital role of mixing the music from his cozy campo studio, which happens to be a short walk from where I live.

We met soon after I moved here in 2016, and I know he was a keeper as soon as he mentioned he was in to bball. Yes they also play basketball ooop noeoehrth 😱😆 Try stealing the ball when he pulls out his teasing And1-behind-the-back-dribble at your own peril!

We’ve had a beautiful baby together in 🤣 where I’m honoured to share the decks with him, we have SO much fun. We also have a Bball music collective ‘The Tonesetas’ - along with the esteemed - with some fresh music on the way there…watch this space! 🏀

But what always been most inspiring to me is how incredibly humble he is. As an engineer, he creates a beautiful space where you are encouraged to really express yourself, no matter how much experience you may have.

He loves helping producers & DJs progress in their careers. As well as being one of the top tutors, check out his awesome new side project .music.simply 🎶 he does that just for fun. That’s the kind of guy he is!

I couldn’t be more grateful to have had his advice and experience in finishing the project, and can’t recommend him highly enough as an engineer, producer, dj, baller, & curry maker (the best)🔥

The story behind ‘Leather Wallets 1JD’ 🐪🏝️

My parents live in Jordan. Whenever I go, I make a habit of going to the downtown area of the capital known as the ‘Balad’ to record the sounds of the hustle and bustle.

Last time I went, there was a guy selling leather wallets. Most of the market sellers are repeating rhythmic one liners, as they do in markets all over the world. But this one was special, as instead of saying the line, he had a speaker with a recorded loop of his voice saying ‘Leather Wallets, 1JD’ (1 JD = 1 Jordanian Dinar). I stood there recording the sound for about 10 mins and I could feel a Drum n Bass rhythm under it. I pretty much kept the loop as it was, and it inspired the whole song. The other voices I also recorded on that same day are all saying similar things like:

‘2 paaand 2 paaand 2 paaand 2 paaand’
‘Women’s, Men’s, Boys & Girls’
‘Come and have a look young man, we have special offers, welcome’ 😆

I think this was the one that I enjoyed making the most, as I laughed my head off the whole way through the process.
