Thank you everyone who came to The Desert Island listening party in the campo 🐪✨

It was such a lovely evening, and playing records on the prototype was really fun, totally different to anything I’ve experienced before.

The great thing about the Halo (the big white flying saucer attached to the ceiling 🛸) is that the sound really doesn’t travel, which is perfect for an island where things are constantly being shut down due to noise restrictions. The sound quality will only get better over time, and I’m sure there will be a huge demand for it in the future.

Special extra thank you to the hard working people who put the event together, for organising everything, Ali for hosting us in his beautiful home, for all the amazing photos, and .usagi & .xabi.chef for the delicious food.

3/10 ‘Mi Latinoamérica sufre’ by the gets better with each listen. Banging wonky cumbia drizzled with some sunny Highlife guitar

4/10 ‘Tangent’ from & ._.the._.record on amazing compilation - ridiculous amount of mega tunes on here..including the mad zouk desert blues crossover ‘Amek Amek’

5/10 ‘Brainwashing’ by .u.g.h.b on - laid back, sunny, relaxing psychedelic soul, not too dissimilar to BadBadNotGood

6/10 ‘Ahmed Malek - Musique Originale De Films (Volume 2)’ on - showcasing the depth of Algerian composer, with nods to bossa nova, reggae and much more

7/10 ‘Disco é Cultura, Vol. 2’ on - one side 70s, the other 80s, both full of Brazilian disco magic. My fav new artist name is Tony Bizarro (and for some reason I have to say it in a Scouse accent)

Time to show some love to the amazing talent behind the Artwork for the EP - my Japanese chicken aka .usagi ⚡️

This wonderful woman is one of the hardest working people I’ve ever met, and is blessed with an immense array of creative talents. Her beautiful illustrations and designs take shape in diverse forms, from restaurant / shop window decorations to T-shirts, logos, branding, flyers, cover artwork and clothing patterns. She also happens to be an excellent cook - just go and taste some of the delights that she’s been creating with her colleagues in the kitchen at 😋

But back to the matter at hand - the artwork for The Desert Island. I was so happy with what she did for my single ‘Asafeer Portixol’ last year...it was always going to be a tough act to follow! And with it being my first EP, the pressure was on! But she rose to it and then some. What was extra special about this was that we kind of sketched the initial idea together in this fun B2B drawing game we have. And I just explained the ideas and the feeling behind it, and she did a beautiful job of it. When she finished it, I was listening to the music and staring at it for ages in total wonder, lost in this little world she had created. 🐪✨

I could not have finished my EP without the help of this legendary humanoid James Rial aka and one half of 🙏

Jamie was the engineer, the man who played the vital role of mixing the music from his cozy campo studio, which happens to be a short walk from where I live.

We met soon after I moved here in 2016, and I know he was a keeper as soon as he mentioned he was in to bball. Yes they also play basketball ooop noeoehrth 😱😆 Try stealing the ball when he pulls out his teasing And1-behind-the-back-dribble at your own peril!

We’ve had a beautiful baby together in 🤣 where I’m honoured to share the decks with him, we have SO much fun. We also have a Bball music collective ‘The Tonesetas’ - along with the esteemed - with some fresh music on the way there…watch this space! 🏀

But what always been most inspiring to me is how incredibly humble he is. As an engineer, he creates a beautiful space where you are encouraged to really express yourself, no matter how much experience you may have.

He loves helping producers & DJs progress in their careers. As well as being one of the top tutors, check out his awesome new side project .music.simply 🎶 he does that just for fun. That’s the kind of guy he is!

I couldn’t be more grateful to have had his advice and experience in finishing the project, and can’t recommend him highly enough as an engineer, producer, dj, baller, & curry maker (the best)🔥

The story behind ‘Leather Wallets 1JD’ 🐪🏝️

My parents live in Jordan. Whenever I go, I make a habit of going to the downtown area of the capital known as the ‘Balad’ to record the sounds of the hustle and bustle.

Last time I went, there was a guy selling leather wallets. Most of the market sellers are repeating rhythmic one liners, as they do in markets all over the world. But this one was special, as instead of saying the line, he had a speaker with a recorded loop of his voice saying ‘Leather Wallets, 1JD’ (1 JD = 1 Jordanian Dinar). I stood there recording the sound for about 10 mins and I could feel a Drum n Bass rhythm under it. I pretty much kept the loop as it was, and it inspired the whole song. The other voices I also recorded on that same day are all saying similar things like:

‘2 paaand 2 paaand 2 paaand 2 paaand’
‘Women’s, Men’s, Boys & Girls’
‘Come and have a look young man, we have special offers, welcome’ 😆

I think this was the one that I enjoyed making the most, as I laughed my head off the whole way through the process.

‘Sufi Swing’ features Moroccan multi disciplinary artist who played the lead guitar melody. 🔥

Momo has worked with amazing artists, ranging from UB40 to the likes of Maalem Mahmoud Gania, so it was a real privilege to collaborate with him on this one. 🎸

I was having fun with a ‘Khaliji’ style rhythm (Khalij = Arabian gulf), with classic 80s drum machine sounds. Momo found a desert melody which fit perfectly with it, and played a lovely bassline to round it off. 🐪

I wanted to give a mystical, late night fire on the beach under the stars type vibe 😆 The dawn chorus and fire crackles you can hear in the background were all recorded here at home in ibiza. ✨🧞‍♂️

The next track on the EP is ‘Dubble Apple’ 🍎🍏

I was going for a reggae version of an old Arabic jazz track. But this is not that at all! It went in a very different direction...Fly played bass and keys on this one to get it going...and I was delighted to involve two old friends for the other parts. Karim Sultan, a multi disciplinary artist and wonderful Oud player, and Jason Parry, also an island resident (the Isle Of Wight), who sprinkled the track with some sweet desert blues guitar. What I particularly love is that neither of them knew what the other was going to record, but both their parts fit the sound space comfortably. 🧞‍♂️

The title comes from the translation of the most popular sh**ha flavour - ‘Toofahtain’ - which means two apples or double apple in Arabic 💨

2/3/4 - Oud player, DJ / Producer, Art curator, and brother Karim Sultan. I met Karim when I first moved to Qatar in 2013...he was the first like minded soul I really connected with. We used to hang out in a relatively grim sh**ha café so it’s perfect that he’d collaborate on this track. He also has one of the coolest names around! 🫨

5 - Jason Parry aka Jase of Spades is a very old friend of mine from university days. We lived together in a quiet town in the Alps for 6 months as part of our degree and we also struck a deep musical bond. He has always introduced me amazing music, stuff like Nitin Sawhney! He is a brilliant DJ too, up there with my favourites 💥

6 - George Solar - photo from our Dubtropical B2B at Las Dalias 2018! George played percussion on the track..a wonderful DJ, producer, percussionist, journalist and friend. A man of strong principles! I have learned a lot from him, and am so grateful for his support. It makes me so happy to see him thriving..check out his new Moonbeams album, out 28th June on 🌝

This has been pretty much my whole world for the last 6 months or so and I’m so excited for it to finally be out there. I hope you like it! But most importantly, I love it. And I think that’s the one that matters the most!

The next track on the EP is ‘Dancehall Daraweesh’ and features this incredibly talented humanoid 🖖💥

Another renaissance man, Antonio is a huge part of and juggles between that, playing bass in the house band, DJing, and producing the smoothest Balearic boogie around. He writes music for top fashion brands and is one of the most humble, naturally musically gifted people I’ve met. He also looks a bit like John Carrol Kirby! If you ask him nicely, he might let you touch his hair 🫨

When Dancehall Daraweesh started taking shape, I knew he would dig it as we both have a shared love of DJ Plead, and it felt like that kind of vibe. He channeled some - previously unbeknownst to him - seemingly ancestral connection to the Arab keyboard masters of the past and played some lovely synthtastic flute and beeps over the top ✨

Watch this space because he also has a new EP coming out later this summer on which is brilliant ☄️

…Aaaaand we also have some space boogie in the works together under our ‘Los Sapos Del Espacio’ alias 🐸🪐

Listening to as much music as I do, I tend to get excited when I feel that I’ve found a gem, which happens very often 😆 . . BUT! there are gems, and then there are are those ‘waaaaaaat next level is thissss?’ type ones you discover that seriously blow you away, that you know you will become one of your top, most played out tunes forever more. And this is the latest one: ‘My tune’ by South London’s very own The Cool-Notes Official pure bliss lovers rock from 1978 💚🌴 . . I’ve been down a bit of a Cool Notes rabbit hole since, and discovered that while they started out as a predominantly reggae band, their sound seamlessly evolved in to that infectious 80’s boogie and funk vibe 🕺🏻 . . Lots of great material up on YouTube where they also have loads of genius nostalgic videos, including my fav ‘you’re never too young’. They didn’t have an official video for it, so they just filmed one during a sound check at a club before a gig 🎥👾 . . https://youtu.be/t83vNRBsTug . .
