This Women's History Month, we're thrilled to highlight Lauren Flate-Gianakakis of LFG Co. • Weddings & Events & Amesbury Dental Associates.
This spotlight is part of a special series brought to you by the Amesbury Chamber of Commerce, Amesbury PACT, and the Amesbury Public Library, designed to build bridges between our young people and the vibrant businesses in our community.
Lauren Flate-Gianakakis interviewed by Max.
-What routines do you follow each day?
When I am at Amesbury Dental Associates, Monday through Friday, I like to start my day early with a work out (usually at Motivate!). I usually get to work before the rest of the team to get the day started and get ahead. I like to keep things light hearted throughout the day so things go smoothly and everyone is happy. At the end of the day I like to go home, spend time with my husband and dog and make sure I am prepped for the following day! On weekends that I have events for LfG Co., I start my day early and review the event. I make sure I have all my emergency supplies on hand and I am ready to tackle the day. (Those days are usually 12-13 hours and are anywhere within the New England limits)
-How do you define success in your business or your life?
I define success in my wedding and event business with curating clients who I have mutual trust with to bring their dream event to life. Another way I define success is by delivering a service that they feel they can recommend to others to do the same for them. Also, by adding new services and growing my business further. This year along with wedding planning/coordinating I have started offering rentals, bar services, and staffing.
I define success at the dental office by helping patients feel at ease when coming to the dentist and providing a patient centric experience. For so long the dental office was a stuffy place where most people did not want to go, we like to be the opposite. We like people to feel like they are coming to visit a group of their friends. (and usually we do become fast friends)
-How have you grown by being a business owner?
I am very lucky that I in general am an extrovert but being a business owner/business manager has made me step outside of my comfort zone and become more confident in situations that I may not have been before.
-Who do you look up to as a role model?
I am very lucky to be surrounded by successful local woman entrepreneurs as well as women in positions of power. Some of my favorite local entrepreneurs include Hannah of Looks by Lopez, Mary of Anchorhitch Media, Kate of Kate Donovan Photography, Cassie of Not So Flatware, and Savannah of Savvy Flower Design. I am also very lucky to work shoulder to shoulder with so many amazing women at Amesbury Dental Associates
-What advice would you give now to your teenager self?
Slow down. Your time as a teenager goes by so quickly and you have so much time to figure out what you want to do so don't rush it. Try as many new things as you can. DON'T SETTLE!
-What made you realize this was what you wanted to do with your life?
When my Mom was 35 she was pregnant with me and was working at Amesbury Dental Associates for Dr Henry Cheney, fast forward 35 year, here I am working at Amesbury Dental Associates pregnant with a little girl so I guess you could say it was just meant to be.
As far as my wedding and event business, there is just something so special about playing such an important role in some of the most important days of some of my clients lives. Not to be sappy but I love, love and I love celebrating. With the skills I have acquired managing Amesbury Dental Associates, it came naturally.
-What was the biggest challenge you faced starting your business?
Taking the first step. The unknown can be so scary but it is so worth stepping into it!
-If you had to give advice to someone starting their own business what would it be?
Go for it and don't get discouraged. It may be slow to start but if you stay passionate it will bloom into something so amazing.
