''Mowgli is a musical storyteller who likes to take left turns. A firm favourite on the Rotterdam scene, he is someone who can lay down boogie sounds from the 80s, uplifting synth-pop, killer Italo, heavily spaced out techno or the frayed-edges of proper Chicago house as well as weirder minimal wave. Though he operates at the colourful, party-starting end of the spectrum, he is not afraid to slow it down, make it dark and keep it deep regardless of the BPM.
Mowgli's sound is tastefully eclectic, but whatever he plays is united by analogue drums and synths. He noticed early on that those sounds define most of the music he likes whether it's early electronic wave, bleep techno from the UK or even material you might not think was designed for dancing to. “If you dig hard and listen closely enough, you can perfectly blend everything together,” he says, “because I am not bound by genre, but more by a vibe.”
It was Mowgli's parents who first immersed him in funk and boogie, but it was the endless possibilities of YouTube that really opened his mind to weird and wonderful sounds. As soon as he could, he found himself out dancing in clubs like BAR and Hoboken where “the freaks came together.” As his own collection grew, his lust to keep digging for multiple genres deepened and he found himself playing records and soon started making waves in Rotterdam. He is now turning heads wider afield having cemented his local reputation at well-respected places like POING, BIT, PIP Den Haag, and SkateCafe. Mowgli is an Operator Radio regular who can turn anyone's living room into a feel-good party space.
Next to DJing, Mowgli works in the city's famous Pinkman Records, which allows him to constantly dig into the more dark and weird shades of electronic music. Naturally, that is having an effect on the music he plays and explains why these days you will often find a more moody piece or out there-track amongst his signature funk and boogie sounds.''
