The Honoring Our Veterans in November program held at Citynews Stand was a great success. We wish to thank all who attended and shared their photos of loved ones who served or currently serve in our Armed Forces and their stories.
A special thank you goes out to Marlena Ascher, Dominick M Maino, Bill Taylor, Marci Romero Berner (owner Tatas Tacos), and Joe Angelestri who organized this event. The presence of Johnathan Chanza (Station Commander of US Army Recruiting Center) was also most appreciated.
We would also like to gratefully acknowledge State Senator Cristina H Pacione-Zayas and Metropolitan Chicago Water Reclamation District Commissioner Daniel Pogorzelski who made time out of their very busy schedules to spend this afternoon with us.
The program started with introductions and then the Star-Spangled Banner was played, All in attendance stood, then placed their hands on their hearts and broke into song.
Marlena played music representing each of the Armed services while those in the audience stood if they were a member of that particular service. When this was completed, Dominick told all about the Wall of Remembrance and the photos displayed on a digital frame.
It was now time for our keynote speaker, Marine (retired) William Taylor, who served 13 months in Vietnam, participated in 28 combat missions and was awarded 3 Purple Hearts. He told us about himself and why he decided to write his book, On Full Automatic: Surviving 13 Months in Vietnam. Upon the completion of this portion of the program a question-and-answer session was held where additional stories were told. After this was completed, Bill interacted with those participants while signing copies of his book.
Many participants then went to Tatas Tacos for dinner and a free dessert given by Marci.
Finally, we also want to thank CBS Chicago who sent out their camera man to capture the event and Block Club Chicago for informing all their readers about today’s special program.
