Uist Science festival main event is this Saturday 18th March, 12-4pm in the old Lochmaddy School. Uist Snack Shack will be there too!
🔬Bring in any specimens from nature you have: leaves, pine cones, acorns, dead insects etc. Conor Lawless be running the microscopy zone with a microscopic camera set-up and big screen for all to see these in 3D, no slides needed! But we will have a standard digital microscope too, if you have slides to share.
🪨Bring in stones, fossils, shells, beach comb finds, and Jean Archer, who will be taking geoscience tours through the environment exhibition, will tell you something about them. Bring a mystery bone! 🦴
🌊Hear about our wonderful seaweed resource with Jean-Pierre Brien from Uist Asco.
✏️Enjoy drawing from nature with Anne Rabbitts, with a focus on seaweed and shells.
🔍Find out about how we monitor our wonderful wild species in Uist and how you can get involved as citizen scientists. Bill Neill and Brian Rabbitts will be there to tell you more.
🐬Find out more about our marine mammals. Our local expert will be running a cetacean station with an amazing opportunity for you to see a whole dolphin skeleton. And there will be other skulls from other animals and birds to look at too.
And it's not all biology! There is some physics too...
🧲Ada Campbell will be running a station on magnetism.
✈️Chris Davidson will be running a station on flight tracking (aeroplanes, not birds) using a raspberry pi.
🍫Maria Finnigan will be running a chocolate welding station (from 12-2pm).
🥄There is an opportunity for younger kids to have some messy science fun again in the messy kids zone (this is chemistry in disguise)!
It's free entry and is a community science festival so please do come along and have some fun, there is something for all ages and interests!
And don't forget, Emily Durie of Otter Mountain (Wild Things Uist) has done a brilliant nature trail for our kids in Langass Woods as part of the festival, which will be on until the end of Sunday 🐜🌿🍄
