We have called on local businesses to spread joy and give back to our community by purchasing meals from Beacon Hill, but now we NEED YOUR HELP!! ** PERSONAL POST**

Most of you know me as a wedding planner, but I’m also a wife, a mommy, and a director for a local non profit. In 2016 I started the Washington Chapter of the Pediatric Hydrocephalus Foundation (PHF). Weddings are the primary focus of my business, but non-profit fundraisers do hold a special place in my heart – one in particular!

I joined the PHF when our oldest son, Wes, then only two, was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus. Never having heard of this condition, barely even able to pronounce it, I searched for answers, resources, anything to prepare us for the road ahead. I found the PHF and have been raising awareness and holding fundraisers ever since.

Hydrocephalus is an incurable brain condition where excess fluid gathers in the brain causing harmful, sometimes fatal pressure. The only treatment is brain surgery to place a shunt, which diverts the fluid to a different area of the body.

Wes has needed two brain surgeries in his life. The first was an emergency brain surgery, when he was first diagnosed. His second surgery was 2 years later due to a malfunction with the shunt and needed to be replaced. Shunts have a 50% failure rate, so children with Hydrocephalus face multiple surgeries in their lives. As awful as those first few years were for us and how horrible each surgery was, Wes has a much milder case than most. We know children who have had more surgeries than years they’ve been alive! This is one of the main reasons why we raise money for research – these children deserve better than 50%.

Since joining the PHF, we have held the Walk for a Cure every year. After walking virtually 2020-2022, we are so excited to be back in person this year. The Walk will be held on August 13 and is open to the public and free to all who attend. We’ll have music, concessions, raffles, crafts, face painting. It’s a super fun, family friendly event! All proceeds raised will go directly toward funding medical research projects.
