Sweet bouquets heading to an event hosted by . I'm proud to donate flowers to this amazing organization, one of the largest domestic violence shelters in Washington State. They provide 56 shelter beds here in Shelton and allow folks to bring their pets which can be a huge barrier for people in leaving abusing situations. Their incredible team of advocates help people make real changes in their lives, and do fantastic work in the community.

Everyone deserves to have beauty in their lives, especially during hard times.

Recently a gardener friend of mine mentioned that she loved the bud stage of flowers, that it was so exciting because it has so much potential. I've been thinking about that a lot.

Homewood Floral has existed since I was a freelancer in Chicago, it started as just an email address for me to keep my freelancer life organized. It's grown into a real little business and sometimes it's hard to believe it's real. We have a growing farm and ran our first CSA this spring with a host of enthusiastic subscribers .

Now it's about to grow even more with the addition of , a collaboration with to bring local flowers and handmade goods to Shelton.

I'm feeling like this bud is about to bloom.

Spent the past two days soaking up some epic flower experiences. Portland's international rose rest garden is such a dream- so much to see and such a long history. My rose era is coming, but there is much to learn it'll be worth taking some time.

Visit to was also truly wonderful. Peak bloom, so many varieties, and being able to see the production fields as well as the show gardens was so interesting. I've got lots of digging and dividing to do this Fall.

I'll be a few days behind when we get back home, but it's been so worth it!

Still absolutely SOARING over yesterday's design class. I loved sharing flower knowledge with this awesome group of women and hearing about their flower connections... Including sweet peas in their arrangement because their grandma grew them, avoiding yellow after a life of fighting dandelions. Flowers are such a wonderful way to bring people together and I cannot WAIT to get my next class scheduled.

Thank you to all the attendees and to for opening up their beautiful space to the community. Thank you to
and
for helping me source gorgeous local blooms.

P.S. I got very few pictures of finished arrangements because I was having too much fun. If you have glamour shots of your creations - send them my way!

Had the opportunity to go to Portland last weekend and take a great workshop at . Although this is not my usual style it was very fun to go back to using painted and synthetic material for a second. (I did bring my own flowers 🤓) I love being able to embrace diversity in design. Thank you to the awesome hosts and to , you were truly lovely!

It's inevitable. Your cut flowers will die.

That's part of the reason they are so special - they don't last forever! Seasonal local flowers are a real rollercoaster, showing up, stealing our hearts, and vanishing. Hopefully they'll return the next year, but nothing is a guarantee. While they're here, help them last as long as possible:

🖤 Keep them out of direct sunlight
🖤 Change their water regularly
🖤 Keep them away from heat
🖤 Give them a fresh cut (unless they are daffodils in a mixed arrangement - these will leak a killer sap and make your other flowers fade faster)

Enjoy something beautiful today.

Xoxo

CSA arrangements will change as the season goes on and different flowers start to bloom. That's the beauty of locally grown! Daffodils, anemone and tulips to start, transitioning to ranunculus and sweet pea into the early summer. I LOVE making flower arrangements and they say you should do what you love. This does make the CSA a bit different thank your hand tied flower bunch. These arrangements are ready to grace wherever you choose; your bedside table, your friends home, your business' counter. What's your favorite spring flower?

Anemone are here to tell you Spring is coming. They don't mind the chilly grey air, and the still long night. They are here and they are enjoying their time. They will be stars of the show soon enough in the spring CSA, they're just practicing their poses at the moment.

It's seed starting time! A true test of concentration and details. I like to split up the tasks because I am generally highly caffeinated and easily distracted. I'll spend an hour or so making soil blocks (pictured here) then come back in little chunks of time over the next few days to get seeds in. It is satisfying in small doses but it's a bit tedious in long stretches.

I have seeds I've saved from my own crops to share next week during the seed exchange on 2/10 from 11-2. Come say hi and let's talk about how amazing seeds are!

*pomegranate not included

Figured I'd lead with the fine print. I realize that there are many things you can do and choose not to do in the world. Some of us have more choices than others.

I'll be totally honest, Valentine's Day is not a holiday I ever loved. I worked as a retail florist for years and it felt cheap and sloppy. Thousands of roses, rented cooled semi trucks, sappy cards on plastic sticks. People felt pressured and stressed and rushed and bad. I remember walking home in February in Chicago, watching people with their unwrapped flower arrangements head home in the freezing air. Probably to find their bouquets wilted and mush in the morning.

I know it's a very important holiday for retail florists and I sincerely do wish them the best. Keeping a flower shop open year round is TOUGH and there is not a lot of room to compete with grocery store margins.

If you do choose to buy flowers in the next few weeks, ask your florist if they can source American grown. If you want to wait to buy local flowers, consider a subscription to a local flower farm. We're here! We're just here making something out of dirt and waiting for the sun to come back. ✨

If you decide to do that from ME, I'll mail your sweetie a beautiful card, letting them know what they've been gifted. All orders before 2/11 apply.
