We're looking for new trees and other edible perennials to add to our urban orchard! Native berries, nuts, edible flowers, this city is full of food producing trees and bushes, and we love them all!

What does this mean? How would it work? If you have an edible tree, bush, or other edible perennial in your yard and just don't know what to do with the huge harvest, we can help.

We do light maintenance throughout the year, and come harvest time, we take care of that too!

That wonderful harvest goes to good use. You have a happy & and healthy tree, and there's less mess from falling fruit.

The tree owners are entitled to a share of the harvest or can opt for an assortment of our locally grown produce instead.

We even donate a portion of the harvests to local organizations supporting folks in need.

Interested? Shoot us a DM and we'll chat!

Autumn harvest season brings soo many goodies that it's hard to keep up!

Our favourite way to handle this huge abundance is preserving them. Dehydrating, freezing, and canning are great ways to save that bounty for the off-season.

This week, we've got lots on the to-do list, but we started with this spiced pear chutney.

Super yummy! Awesome with samosas, pork, or even turkey. This would be a great cranberry sauce alternative for the upcoming turkey feast.

Limited quantities! Get your hands on some this Sunday at the Leslieville Farmers Market, 9-2 at Greenwood Park.

Wowza! isn't messing around! She's whipped up a new batch of goodies for us, and they're 🔥🔥🔥

Peachy Peppa' - a super spicy island style sauce, featuring congo peppers and peaches
Fiery Salsa - of course, this is great on tacos and nachos, but we like it on our eggs.
Pepper Jelly - put this on everything! Sandwiches, chicken, fish, it's all good!
Real Ketchup - yep Ketchup. Simple and so delicious.

You can order online for pick-up at Queen/Ossington or pop by the Leslieville Farmers' Market (Sundays 9-2) to buy some in person.

If you've never tried sticky corn, these beautiful red ones are a great introduction.

Popular in many asian cuisines, sticky corn isn't actually sticky. Though it's very different from the sweet corn we're used to here in North America..

Expect much less sweetness and more actual corn flavour. It's more toothsome too, not something you'd eat raw. But once boiled or steamed, it has so much potential!

This particular variety has a little bit of sweetness and is a smidge more tender, making it a great introduction for unaccustomed palettes.

Have you tried sticky corn before? What's your favourite way to prepare it?

Get some tomorrow at the Leslieville Farmers' Market

These are corn seeds. Starburst sweet corn, to be specific. If all goes well, we'll have beautiful red speckled cobs at market later in the season.

We love growing colourful veggies! And while they look great, it's as much about the additional nutritional benefits. Here's a breakdown of what each colour typically brings to the table:

Red fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, strawberries and red beans, are packed with vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium and antioxidants.

Yellow/orange fruits and vegetables, including carrots, peaches, squash and pineapple, are also loaded with vitamin C, vitamin A and potassium. They can also boost the immune system and enhance vision.

Mushrooms, bananas, onions and other white fruits and vegetables are good for the heart and help to control cholesterol levels.

Green means lots of heart-protective potassium and vitamin K, which aids the blood clotting process. Green fruits and veggies also help to maintain vision health and strong bones and teeth. Dark green, leafy vegetables have the highest concentration of antioxidants and fiber.

Blue/purple fruits and vegetables, including such favorites as cranberries, purple grapes, raisins and eggplant, boost urinary tract health and memory function and promote healthy aging.

So next time you hit the grocery or farmers' market, be sure to get a rainbow. Your health will thank you.

We had another critter stop to say hello today!

This tiny fellow is a mantid. Often touted as beneficial in the garden, these guys are neutral at best. They're voracious hunters who will eat just about anything. This includes pests, butterflies, and bees. They'll even eat fellow mantids.

We actually don't have any native mantids here in Ontario. This is probably either the European mantis (Mantis religiosa) or the Chinese mantid (Tenodera aridifolia).

Canada's only native mantid is the ground mantid (Litaneutriaminor), found in southern British Columbia.

While they're not exactly helpful, we don't discourage their presence in our gardens and fields, but that's really just cause they're cool to watch.

If there's no wildlife visiting your garden, is it really alive?

We love it when we spot critters at the farm and in the gardens where we grow.

This one gave us quite the scare, though! Can you spot him?

Toads are an especially welcome guest. They eat a lot of pests we don’t want in our gardens, including slugs, snails, and many harmful insects. Basically, they’ll eat anything they can catch. Larger toads may even eat mice or snakes!

Over the growing season, a single toad can eat thousands of pests. That's a huge help when growing organically. So we do our best to make them welcome.

Interested in recruiting these volunteer pest control experts? You just need to make them feel at home.

Toads need a few things to survive: access to moist soil and water, shelter from predators, and a chemical-free environment.
