In a statement about the recent ruling, SC justice Sonia Sotomayor shared that โThe opinion of the Court is, quite literally, a notice that reads: "Some services may be denied to same-sex couples."โ
In the last days of pride month, the Supreme Court chose to rule in favor of a woman who petitioned for her right to deny same-sex couples her service as a wedding website designer. There are now officially no federal or state protections preventing businesses from denying creative services to not only the LGBTQ+ community but other marginalized groups based on race, disability, or even marital status.
The wedding industry is particularly affected by this ruling as it is primarily comprised of creative services. It is more important than ever to create safe spaces in the wedding industry. Here are a few ways you can contribute:
- Be vocal about your support for the LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and disabled communities! Now is a critical time to be intentional about creative safe welcoming spaces in the wedding industry.
- Use inclusive language! Not every wedding consists of one bride and one groom. Consider using more neutral language such as partners, clients, etc. To maintain an approachable atmosphere to all.
- If you must deny services to someone in a marginalized community due to a logistical reason, be specific and open about why you will not be able to work with them.
Comment some other ways to support LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and disabled communities that aren't listed in this caption!

Regan and Kai's wedding day last summer at the historic @thedininglodge was definitely one of those days for Michael and I at Semperflora! We enjoyed a warm late summer day in Yellowstone and worked steadily as everything fell smoothly into place. And @regandesmet was an angel of a bride! I know I know, the trend is supposed to be โoh I couldnโt think of any reasons.โ But no wedding vendor can serve the whole world, nor should you want to. Have you ever heard the quote โstop trying to make everyone like you. You donโt even like everyoneโ? I want my clients to be PUMPED to work with me because our personalities vibe together, we dig each otherโs style, flowers are important to them, and theyโre stoked about the idea of their flowers actually meaning something.
If flowers arenโt an important thing for you to invest in for your wedding or elopement, you donโt care about interpretive design, and you donโt want your own personal wedding cheerleader prepared to give you a pep talk to forget your mother-in-lawโs opinions and do whatever you want, then Iโm not the florist for you. And thatโs cool too. Thereโs a perfect wedding vendor team for everyone!
