Over 80 years ago, Gennaro and Vincenza founded Addeo Bakers in the Little Italy section of the Bronx. Thus beginning the Addeo family heritage of being a premier maker of traditional Italian bread and biscuits. Today, three generations later, their grandsons, Thomas and Laurence, have taken the mantle of leadership of this dynasty from their fathers, Salvatore and Laurence. They are proud to continue the traditions of their ancestors. Mario's Restaurant and Catering has served first-rate Neapolitan fare since 1919, and is the oldest restaurant on Arthur Avenue. In 1915, Scolastica Migliucci and her son, Giuseppe, originally opened the business as a pizzeria in Harlem on 114th Street, before moving it to Arthur Avenue four years later. Giuseppe’s sons, Mario and Clemente, also joined the business, and Clemente became the chef. Some of the original dishes included pasta with homemade tomato sauce, meatballs, braciola and sausage. In the late 30s and 40s, dishes including veal, chicken, steak and calamari were added. Today, and five generations later, they serve the same original family recipes, using authentic ingredients and the freshest fish and meats from local businesses. Mario’s is a steadfast reminder of the neighborhood’s past. 💫 🇮🇹

In the early 1900s Lindo and Maria Borgatti left their home in Bologna, Italy with their suitcases and Maria’s family recipes. After working various jobs, they saved enough money to open Borgatti's Ravioli & Egg Noodles in November of 1935. Along with their six sons, they gathered pastry boards, rolling pins, wooden benches, and knives from their home and started making egg noodles from 6am to 8pm. Their first pound of egg noodles was sold for fifteen cents. Their now famous ravioli was created after their son George made a wooden ravioli board, and you could get 100 ravioli for one dollar. Their son Mario, who would go on to inherit Borgatti’s, introduced their staple specialty flavors of pasta, and worked at Borgatti’s until his late 90s. Mario’s son, Chris, is the third-generation pasta maker in his family, and his wife, Joan, and their children, can all be found working side by side. Today, egg noodles and ravioli from Borgatti’s have traveled across the globe. Borgatti’s remains a quintessential family business, which customers can see from the portraits of loved ones that adorn the walls. For the family, working in Borgatti’s, even for a short while, has become a rite of passage. ♥️ 🇮🇹

In the Petti kitchen in Nocera Inferiore, a provincial town in Salerno Italy, food was more than nourishment. It was culture, the unifying family force that could spark a conversation, quiet an argument, or celebrate life. At the age of 14, two years after moving to the Belmont section of the Bronx, Stan began working at Full Moon Restaurant and eventually helped his father buy the business from its owner. His dream was to make Full Moon a family business and share his culture with others. Since 1976, Full Moon Pizza has been a constant reminder of where the family came from and represents the Italian core: good company, soul warming food, and family. 🍕

In 1930, Antonio Biancardi, an Italian immigrant, opened a Bronx butcher shop on the premise that in good times or bad, people always need to eat. Since then,Biancardi's Meats has remained a family-run shop, and an institution on Arthur Avenue. Currently in its third generation, brothers Sal and Anthony Biancardi continue the tradition of quality products and unmatched customer service. Trimmed cuts of lamb, beef, pork and veal fill display cases, along with items like quail, rabbit and pheasant. In true southern Italian style, sausage, tripe, and house-cured pancetta are also available. 🇮🇹

Don Pasquale Egidio, a Southern Italian immigrant, came to the New World in 1909 and started his business where a community of Italian immigrants were putting down roots. He opened Egidio Pastry Shop in 1912, and the shop has sat on the same block of East 187th Street near Arthur Avenue since then. Although the current owner, Maria Carmela Lucciola, is not a descendant of Egidio, she continues to use his original recipes and has phenomenal pride and respect for the business. The pastry shop is known for their cannoli, biscotti, cakes and so much more. Carmela has added her own touches as well to meet the needs of the community, and introduced classes so people can learn at the oldest pastry shop in the neighborhood. 🍰♥️ 🇮🇹

In 1961, Pietro “Peter” Terranova arrived in America from Sicily. Staying close to his roots, Peter gravitated to the Little Italy section of the Bronx. In a short time, he began working at a local bakery sweeping the floors. When the owner of the bakery decided to sell the business, Peter jumped at the opportunity. In October 1967, Terranova Bakery came to life in a small storefront on E 187th Street. To assist in the family business, Peter’s brother, Gandolfo joined him. Over the next ten years, the bakery steadily built up a loyal customer base. Each day, Peter headed out at 5 am to peddle bread door-to-door, often not returning until after 8 pm (He even delivered on his wedding day!). Minding the store, Peter’s wife, Vera, and Gandolfo’s wife, Mina, worked catering to their beloved customers.
In 1976, Terranova Bakery expanded operations and added an additional location at 691 East 187th Street. Beginning in the late 1970s, Peter and Gandolfo entered into the wholesale business and the baked goods continued to grow in popularity.
In 2000, Peter and Gandolfo’s sons joined the family business and have been working diligently to continue the family tradition. 🥖 🇮🇹

Their son, Jerome, has proudly carried on the tradition since 1990, and his delectable baked goods have been enjoyed by visitors from near and far and celebrities alike. 🍰♥️🇮🇹

"It is our duty to give meaning to the life of future generations by sharing our knowledge and experience; by teaching an appreciation of work well done and a respect for nature, the source of all life; by encouraging the young to venture off the beaten path and avoid complacency by challenging their emotions." - Paul Bocuse
