So, by popular demand, the results of the 2024 speaker shootout. Before you read the slides, a primer of where we got to here.

After hoping to do this format for the past two years, we were finally able to make it happen. A blind test of equipment so you are forced to listen with your ears and not just your eyes. And in doing so we've had more than a couple surprises.

I did my best to try to match up costs, types, sizes, wattage, cabinet materials, and the like. Because of what we had come in not every grouping is as perfect as I'd like (hint hint manufacturers time to join in on this fun). In some classes the price differences are identical, some are in the many many thousands of dollars. This isn't to put a brand or speaker in unfair competition with one another. It's simply a point of expediency and trying to be as fair as possible.

If a speaker had a DSP mode for music we would allow that mode to be activated. This would be the most common output for a DJ. We also took the advice of a vendor and we made sure that the energy going to the speakers were as close to maximum so their DSPs would have the least amount of effort to process the signal. We would then show to the public what those output settings were per speaker, and which speaker they were listing to. We set measurements at 104dB at 1 meter for speakers that could achieve that. There were some that couldn't so we would set all speakers in that class to a lower rating of 100dB at 1 meter to be equal.

We also did not tell judges what kind of speakers were being tested initially. At the end of each round we would tell them which speaker was in which slot.

We had judges rate bass, brightness, presence, and an overall score. While we had around 15 to judge the reality is it's a lengthy process and only 9 completed all the rounds. For that I discarded the incomplete scores. There was one judge that accidentally added up their three categories into the overall score. For that I averaged the three to arrive at a number. There were 7 wedding DJs, 1 club DJ, and one "line dance" DJ.

Group 1: Battery the EV Everse 8 came in with a commanding lead. The general view seems that clarity was the big deciding factor.

Group 2: Lower cost battery. This one was much closer at just 0.05 of a difference between 1st and 2nd. This is where something like the consideration of price may constitute a choice in buying.

Group 3: Cabs only. A bit more on price difference here, but wattages were consistent throughout. Also note the close 0.24 difference between 1st and 2nd.

Group 4: Budget column arrays. THIS is why we loved the idea of the blind shootout. A significant difference in quality was evident, so much so I literally had to go back to make sure the sources were right. When I announced the Harbinger MLS1000 as the victor, and the price, there were literal audible GASPS from the entire audience.

Group 5: Mid-tier column arrays. It starts to get a little more challenging of which belongs where, but I think this is a pretty fair comparison of some of the more popular models around at those price points. The Evolve 50 took a significant win.

Group 6: High-tier column arrays. Yes a bigger swing in price but the Turbosound had a higher output capability which placed it in this group. This was also the first time publicly that anyone has been able to listen to the RCF 14A/AX15 column/sub combo and it was the clear winner. Some people may be surprised at the lower scores of the Maui 44 G2 but it suffered by not having a music mode DSP. It still can be shaped to sound phenomenal, but out of the box it's very flat.

Group 7. Big money column arrays. If you have big money and like big cabinets, these two fit the bill. A note on the EAW AC6/OTTO combination. Normally they would add additional processing to the signal coming in, but in a bout of fairness we would not allow additional manipulation of the signal.

Group 8: Budget cabs + subs. Exact same prices. The Alto is rated much higher in wattage though and took the crown.

Group 9: Cabs + Subs. Between $1800-2700 we had four contenders. And 1st and 2nd were separated only by 0.04 points. The JBL was hampered by a broken sub, so please take that in consideration.

Group 10: Cabs + Subs: From $3000-4000 three more options to choose from. And yes the EV ETX 35P took the victory but also is a three-way top. So not a perfect comparison however on price it couldn't be any closer.

Group 11: Premium Cabs + Subs. Now we get into a wild price difference between $5500-$13,200. The Martin rig from Tony Fernandez personal use may have come in last however it is a far more compact option. It only competed in this group because of price as a boutique performer. A very clear winner here with the RCF TTW4A/TTS18AS combo, but also at a price premium.

I really want to thank every manufacturer, distributor, and DJ who brought in these speakers to test out. We already have ideas for 2025 to make this an even better shootout that we will hope come to fruition. While not perfect, we strive to be as fair an equitable as possible. And I really have to give so much credit to Ben Stowe for putting in his time and knowledge to make this shootout a reality.

And while this data is out here for the public to see, it's nothing like experiencing it all first hand. Not every judge came to a consensus in every category, and your best position is to attend the Harvest Of Sound Boston for yourself.
