I love first looks because they build up suspense, nervousness, and couples are anxious to see each other. Therefore, it is super important to reflect the same on film. Want to know how I filmed this first look? I do two takes. The first one is natural, meaning I let the bride walk up to the groom without stopping her. I inform photographers that audio is really important for this and will pick up anything they say. Therefore, I suggest the couple have their moment. Once they are done, I coordinate with the photographer and the bride to do a second take. This time, I have the bride walk towards the groom again, and get different angles (feet, back, hands, etc). Sound effects are also important. If you noticed you can hear the steps as she gets herself in position to tap him. When both are then edited together, you get the build-up and suspense the two felt right before seeing each other and pulls you in the film as you see how the first look unfolded. 😉 Here is a small section of the Stankewitz wedding film. This is the opening to a recent film. I tried this technique to set the mood and tone for the film, in a way symbolic, that love prevails even through darkness. Thanks to my brides for letting me be creative and seeing the vision for their film. I always tell them what I ask them to do may look or seem silly but always promise them it will turn out beautiful. This bride was blown away with the opening scene and expressed how much she loved it. It’s amazing what a little lighting and creativity can do. Thanks to @nestorandelsie for helping with the lighting. PRO TIP: Doing this in the rain will absolutely enhance this look, as you will see the water drops falling in the back reflected by the lighting.
