Top producer prize to Camano Zoe today. I’d say there’s at least 15, a couple snapped off not quite how I’d like but we will see if they eye up still. Hopefully not too much rain tomorrow so I can do some more lifting.

I collaborated with Jason to make a video on the process of taking care of your tubers in the fall. I really hope this will help new growers have a good base of information to successfully store their tubers. If you have any other questions, please comment below and I will answer them.

Many thanks to K**a for hosting this tour and demo at her business, Three Daughters' Dahlias in Mission. Here's that link to the American Dahlia Society that...

A great example of why I like to say getting the ‘mother’ tuber removed before storage is a smart move. This one had already rotted and it was spreading into the neighbouring tubers. If I had left it, it would’ve likely all been rotten by spring. I really do wonder how often we blame failures in storage on what were actually tubers that went into storage already with rot. Remember, we haven’t even received frost in my area yet.

Jolene (aka Cafe Au Lait Mini) is some kind of special. I’d definitely like to plant multiples of it next year. It’s a late bloomer so I’ll be starting it early. Hopefully it produced some nice tubers, we shall see soon! Thanks for sharing it with me so I could enjoy it this year.

Well, tuber lifting is coming into full swing here. You don’t need to wait for a frost. I hose mine off so they can be inspected for any health issues, though if some dirt is able to stay intact, that’s good too. I do tend towards dividing in the fall so I can hopefully catch any signs of rot and remove those areas. Plus spring starts getting busy in the gardens. The mother tuber, which is what you planted in the spring, often is rotted by now, so it can be wise to snap it off the clump even if you are not splitting your clumps. All the little stringing roots can be removed along with any tubers smaller than a pencil. Make sure everything has a chance to dry, or cure, on the freshly cut areas. This is often 24 hours in my garage. I store in vermiculite but if you’d like a more affordable option, pine shaving (animal bedding) is a good option. They can go into plastic containers and have the tubers not touching one another. Some people put a few holes in the container but I think this depends on what works for your storage space and may be best to experiment with some. The most important thing is that you don’t let your tubers freeze. Sheds are not recommended in Canada! An oil-filled heater is my suggestion if you need to keep a space warm enough for them, but don’t forget about them during a power outages. I’m sure I’ll follow up with more tips in the days to come.

Today is my birthday so I made myself a bouquet. But it’s not just about bouquet, it’s also a wish! that next year, a bride would like to work with me, for a fall wedding, using these colours. Of course, these colours could be used anytime, however the precious, frilly, Japanese anemones with the lilac tips are only available in the fall. I think this pale lilac and gold colour would be such a fun twist on the usual fall colours and make for photos that look great all year round. I’ve also included another small arrangement I did a few weeks ago with similar colours that has gorgeous zinnias in it. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any to use today. The blush coloured bouquet was done over the weekend and also has the same anemones in it. So if you hear of any locals with wedding plans for 2025, please mention me!

Remember that lavender coloured bloom with all the petals from a while ago? Well here it is now in the cooler weather. The photos came out more vibrant than reality but it’s definitely looking more pink than before. Here I’ve paired it beside ‘Bargaly Blush’ cause it’s colour is nearly identical. I’m starting to think perhaps it wasn’t mislabeled and is indeed ‘20th Avenue For Mom’. Otherwise it’s another one of their’s that is similar but either way, it gets to grow here another year.

🍁It’s time for Thanksgiving Weekend orders!🍂
Please message me if you’d like to arrange to pick up of a festive bouquet over the holiday weekend. Bouquets will be $30 and if I have sufficient orders, I’ll be bringing in some extra greenery etc to add to the arrangements. There will be limited amounts of availability each day and pick up times will be no earlier than 11am (it’s not light out very early or late this time of year) Let me know if you’d like a mason jar with jute twine or vase with ribbon (a sample photo from last year is in the comments)
This will be the last weekend of sales this year as I’ll be re-routing my focus into winter preparations.

The garden makes the arrangement. I’m fortunate enough to be a part of a process that seems to be something beyond me. There’s something blooming particularly well that calls me, and from there, it all just grows into something special. It’s powerful, and I’m so fortunate to experience it. Thank you for every order that’s the sparkle to begin the next creation. I am grateful.
