styling a cafĂŠ-themed commercial shot with a bold pop art twist:

✨ set the vibe: we’re creating that ‘sip your coffee, take a bite’ moment. warm, inviting, but with a pop art twist that makes it feel fresh and exciting.

✨ props that make a statement: coffee cup, fresh newspaper, and a perfectly placed cookie. nothing too fussy, but everything feels intentional.

✨ lighting that pops: bold, high-contrast shadows and sharp highlights—this isn’t your average shot. we’re turning up the texture, adding depth, and bringing almost a cartoon-like feel to each detail.

✨ bring it all together: it’s about showing your product in a way that grabs attention—making it stand out and almost leap off the screen.

truth bomb: the photographers who can make comfort food shine are the ones landing the big gigs.

why?

because ugly food is where the money is.

you know, the dishes that taste amazing but look… a little questionable. think grandma’s pot roast, sloppy joe sliders, or a gooey, melted lasagna.

it's what most people eat, sell, and buy

here are a few tricks we swear by👇
✨ layer it up. napkins, plates, extra cutlery—add depth to your scene.
✨ freshen it up. garnishes like herbs, citrus zest, or microgreens are your best friends for breaking up heavy, monotone colors.
✨ highlight the textures. think glossy sauces, crispy toppings, or melty cheese pulls.
✨ nail the light. back-side lighting is our secret weapon for capturing every highlight and detail.

the best part?

mastering this skill means landing more high-paying gigs—those same tricky, “ugly” foods that are the bread and butter of restaurant menus.

comment "drool worthy" to get your hands on a pocket book that will change they way you style challenging foods and lead to way more $$$ in your pockets!

Ugly food is everywhere. 😬 Think sloppy burgers, casseroles, brown food, fried food, and messy sandwiches.

If you can’t make that look good, you’re missing out on the majority of paid gigs.

Here’s how to turn ugly food into scroll-stopping shots—and impress every client👇🏻

Ugly food is unavoidable in commercial food photography and restaurants 👀

These are the foods most brands and restaurants need help selling.

Here are the secrets to making any food look good👇🏻
1- Use good light - if a window isn't available bring flash or continuous light to ensure your subject is well lit
2- Add pops of color with fresh garnishes, napkins, or even the background.
3- Layer textures—wooden boards, linens, and crumbs—to add depth to dull foods.
4- Create a story! Rustic or messy vibes make ugly food feel real, relatable, and mouthwatering.
5- Add hands and humans to help evoke emotion!

Ugly food isn’t a problem—it’s an opportunity. Ready to level up your portfolio with shots that wow clients?

Comment "drool worthy" and let’s make it happen.

are you a food blogger? we're talking to you today!
did you know you can make money by featuring a brand in a recipe that's already on your blog?

yup!

here's how:
- find top performing blog posts
- find the contact for the brands you used (or brands that are similar and could have been used in the recipe) And now is a great time to pitch to brands!
- pitch new visuals that feature their product and boost their brand
- show blog traffic proof as the value (in a follow-up email!)

It doesn't have to be complicated and depending on your blog traffic can bring in some serious $$$

two simple angles your can use for blog food photography:
- straight on
- overhead

struggling to get restaurants to notice you?
here's 7 steps to change that and start making $$👇

1) reach out over IG and let them know that you are building your portfolio and would be honored to shoot at their establishment. tell them that in exchange for a meal you would be happy to shoot the dishes, ambiance, etc. and share them with an honest review on google.

this is great because the google images help them rank higher on google and bring in more traffic!

plus, it helps you show the value of working with future restaurants when you can show how well your images perform!
(we have google images with over 75k views!)

2) next ask for the email for the best person to contact about this opportunity
3) if they don't respond or give you a contact - CALL THEM!!!
4) schedule the shoot / have the actual shoot
5) after the shoot and review posted send them a report card of your "partnership" (we have a report card template in our resources if you need!)
6) add a licensing option if they would like to license the images to use on their socials and web (usually that is about $25-$300 per image depending on the restaurant size, brand, etc.)
7) offer an on-going partnership incentive

This is a GREAT way to build your portfolio, make connection and gain trust, all while not working or free!
