Throughout his decades-long career, Oscar Peterson accomplished the near impossible: greatness with every note played and the acquisition of new generations of fans worldwide, regardless of the obstacles life threw at him. In 1994, only one year after suffering a stroke that rendered his left hand weakened, Peterson took the stage in Munich to prove to his collaborators, fans, and himself, that his earned title of “Maharaja of the keyboard” by Duke Ellington still rang true. By reinventing his playing style at 68 years old, he demonstrated his undiminished inventive prowess with an all-star band including Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass), Lorne Lofsky (guitar) and Martin Drew (drums).

In just over one week, the kick-off to the OP 100 celebrations will begin in Calgary at BuckingJam Palace on October 11-12-13. With music from Robi Botos, Mike Downes and Jim Doxas, each night will focus on a different portion of OP’s life and career. Night two (October 12), will focus on OP's catalogue of original compositions from throughout his career. Céline Peterson will be joining the trio as a special guest each evening in conversation with BJP Artistic Director, Lisa Buck. As well, select memorabilia items and photos from the Peterson archives will be on special display for each night of this series.

From Music Director, Jim Doxas: "Oscar possessed a profound understanding of jazz, classical music, and blues. His compositions masterfully blend these genres, resulting in some of the most lyrical melodies that continue to thrive within the jazz idiom. From the roar of a lion to a baby’s cry, his music paints a vivid picture of who we are as Canadians and global citizens."

In less than two weeks, the kick-off to the celebrations will begin in Calgary at BuckingJam Palace on October 11-12-13. With music from Robi Botos, Mike Downes, and Jim Doxas, each night will focus on a different portion of OP's life and career. "We are stunned and deeply saddened with the news of Russell Malone’s sudden passing. We especially offer our deepest condolences to his family and dear friends, as we join the entire jazz community in mourning his loss. The gaping hole left behind will be felt for a long time. Bittersweet now is the memory of his recent performance of “The Africa Suite” at SF Jazz, and it is with gratitude and love that we remember that night and so many more shared musical times. In celebration of GRAMMY Award-winning, International jazz legend Oscar Peterson's 100th birthday next year, Massey Hall and the Oscar Peterson Estate announce a centennial celebration honouring the titan of jazz on Saturday, June 14, 2025.

Oscar Peterson at 100: A Canadian Celebration will feature music from throughout Peterson's near seven-decade career, with a mix of both his original compositions and jazz standards, performed with love by an eclectic mix of artists, all of whom have drawn inspiration from Peterson's immeasurable legacy.

The evening, co-produced by Céline Peterson and JUNO Award-winning drummer, composer, educator, and this evening's Musical Director, Jim Doxas, was born from the pair's desire to curate an evening that embodied the excellence that Peterson led throughout his life.

To commemorate this momentous occasion, more than twenty acclaimed Canadian musicians will come together on the legendary Allan Slaight Stage at Massey Hall. Norman Granz is, was, and always will be, the greatest and most influential jazz impresario in history. For Norman, it was not first and foremost about the talent, but the people. He was not happy with the world they lived in, so he changed it. He protected fiercely and was the most loyal human being you could ever imagine. He is missed daily, remembered with love, and ever present. Happy birthday, Norman. 💜
