In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we respectfully & gratefully acknowledge the Native Peoples whose historical land we use for our events in Central Virginia 🌾
“When the first colonists arrived in Jamestowne in 1607, they immediately met with Indian people on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. These Indians belonged to a vast Powhatan autocracy and spoke Algonquian languages. In the piedmont and mountain regions of this area lived Siouan Indians of the Monacan and Mannahoac tribes, arranged in a confederation ranging from the Roanoke River Valley to the Potomac River, and from the Fall Line at Richmond and Fredericksburg west through the Blue Ridge Mountains.” - Monacan Indian Nation Website (www.monacannation.com)
From the historical data that has been found, it is understood that the Manahoac Confederacy extended throughout “what became Orange County (1734 to within its final boundaries). The earliest written account of their presence was in 1440. The Manahoacs were a hunting, gathering and farming people with nine known (recorded) tribal communities. Most of their communities were situated along waterways. Their closest neighbors were the Monacans, and the much larger and more powerful Powhatan Confederacy.” - James Madison Museum of Orange County Heritage
“The region now to be considered, part of the ancient country of the Manahoac, extends westward from the falls of the Rappahannock at Fredericksburg, up the valley of the Rappahannock to Kellys Ford, and along the Rapidan from its mouth to near Mortons Ford.” - Smithsonian Institution

Sending out the last of our 2022 Dirty Kitten donations today. As we head into the new year, let us remember that not everyone is joyous during this time. Sending peace, love, and light to all those who need it 💜
In November of 2020, a good friend of mine (Rose) took her own life. I received the devastating news from my mother who had been close with Rose and her family. Of course, it was a shock, but (sadly) it wasn’t a surprise as Rose had struggled with mental health issues for most of her life. Some knew about this and others didn’t.
Rose was a brilliant, intelligent, gifted woman who loved adventure and was always seeking out new challenges through her career as a scientist and engineer to her hobbies which ranged from horseback riding to kayaking, hiking, and fishing. She once traveled across the world to Mongolia to participate in the Mongol Derby touted as the “Longest & Toughest Horse Race in the World” (hosted by The Equestrianists).
Hidden under all of her s***k and bravado, however, was a woman struggling with depression and anxiety among other mental health battles. Rose had her demons and although they could be quelled, they were never eradicated. When the pandemic hit, she struggled with the isolation and decided to end it all a few weeks after her birthday in the fall of 2020.
When I got the news, I broke down. I cried for Rose, for her family, and for everyone in her life who wanted so badly to help her. I cried because I felt like a bad friend: I should have done more, said more, tried harder, etc. At a loss of what to do, I reached out to my friend and teammate, Rah, who has some experience with this struggle and she suggested I take a look at TWLOHA. That began my journey to find a way to “honor” Rose’s memory.
I wanted to do something meaningful and help others so I reached out to the folks at TWLOHA and started a conversation with Amber (Director of Partnerships). Together, we formulated a plan: RIDE FOR IT. We would host a campaign that coupled cycling with hope to raise money for the organization and their mission while also honoring Rose and her life.
This was my way of sharing Rose’s memory with others and attempting to give back—even on a small scale—in a meaningful way. My hope is that RIDE FOR IT can become an annual event that provides hope and help to those struggling with their mental health and battling with anxiety, depression, addiction, and suicidal thoughts. Cycling, although a physical activity, provides emotional and psychological benefits that can literally “save” someone from a potentially drastic life decision.
As an athlete and human who struggles with both anxiety and depression, I have many times found myself in a dark place. Physical activity (such as running, walking, and cycling) has helped me find both strength and balance during those trying times. My hope is that we can somehow help others to do the same. Thank you to everyone involved in our 2nd Annual Ride For It campaign for your love and support. Thank you To Write Love On Her Arms. for doing what you do and creating support systems, resources, and hope for those in need. -Alex

Dirty Kitten Productions
“Go where you feel most alive” - Unknown
OUR STORY: Dirty Kitten Productions (a division of CFH Adventures & Events, LLC) is an event management and promotion company owned by wife-husband duo, Alex Forte and Chris Howell (Frederick, Maryland). It began with a joint dream--“We wanted to create a business around the things that we love: cycling, traveling, community, and adventure.”
Parent company, CFH Adventures & Events, was born out of this concept: “It’s not just a business; it’s a lifestyle.” Alex (a former middle and high school teacher) handles the day-to-day operations of the business and works part-time as a sales associate at a local bike shop, as well as races for and manages an elite women’s cycling team while Chris has a full-time job as a software engineer and does his own racing. The two began their business as an “experimental side-gig” when Alex started considering options outside of her teaching profession. Having grown up with a father who owns his own music talent agency, she had both experience with and knowledge of the business. Meanwhile, Chris wanted to use his software expertise to do something different and interesting outside of his usual work environment. The couple put their heads together and came up with a plan.
Everything came to fruition in late 2018 and started with a single, marquee event: The Dirty Kitten Gravel Race (DKGR) set for the following August in Rapidan, Virginia. What began as a car trip discussion turned into a “crazy” idea that morphed into something real. DKGR was launched in early 2019 with registration opening February 1st and the inaugural event selling out 3 weeks in advance. That was just the beginning...
“The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure.” - Jon Krakauer
“We thought it would be a hit, but we didn’t realize it was going to be that popular. It was promoted as a gravel road race with multiple 20-mile laps along gravel farm roads on private property in Central Virginia. Our main focus in promoting the event was sharing the experience with our participants. DKGR isn’t just a gravel race; it is an adventure, a journey, a quest. That’s what makes it so enticing. As human beings, we long for adventure. Life is really just one adventure after another. We wanted to create an event that would allow people to share in that adventure, that experience, with one another.”
Following the success of DKGR, other folks started reaching out to Alex and Chris for help with their events. The business couple soon realized that people needed and wanted help so they decided to expand their business to include event management and promotion services. The purpose, goal, and mission of Dirty Kitten Productions is to assist people in finding their own adventures. “Our events are always going to be 100% us. What that means is we put 100% of ourselves into the planning, management, and ex*****on of our events. That’s what makes CFH Adventures and Dirty Kitten Productions so unique. We won’t create or assist with an event that we don’t believe in and wouldn’t do ourselves. In fact, one of our guiding principles is to only be involved with events that incite joy and excitement. If something doesn’t excite us, it’s going to be hard to get others amped on it.”
Looking ahead, Alex and Chris have many ideas and goals for their business. This year (2020), Dirty Kitten Productions will be hosting 2 major events:
Cat Camp: Women’s MidAtlantic Spring Cycling Weekend (April 2-5, 2020)
Dirty Kitten Gravel Race 2.0 (July 25, 2020)
As well as the possibility of a few other, smaller events and assisting with some in the area. “We would like to get more involved with our community here in Frederick, as well as in the MidAtlantic Region as a whole. There are so many great cycling and adventure events that could use help, and we are definitely interested in offering our services. There are also some ideas that we have been throwing around for other, new events and it would be cool if we could get some of those off the ground in the next couple of years. Who knows, maybe we will start a race series. There are so many options! The sky is the limit!” For now, they aren’t sharing any of their ideas so stay tuned for more #ridedirty endeavors.
“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.” - Jack Kerouac
