It seems that the killing of lions was reserved in Mesopotamia for royalty, and kings were often shown in art doing so. There may have been a religious dimension to the activity. A surviving letter on a clay tablet records that when a lion entered a house in the provinces, it had to be trapped and taken by boat to the king. The Asiatic lion, today only surviving in a small population in India, is generally smaller than the African variety, and much later records show that their killing at close quarters, as depicted in the reliefs, was not an impossible feat. When the sword is used, it seems likely that, as in relatively recent times, the actual technique was that "the lion-killer wrapped his left arm in a huge quantity of goats'-hair yarn or tent-cloth" and tempted the lion to attack this, while the sword in the right hand despatched him. This padded defence is never depicted. More often, the king shoots arrows at the lion; if these fail to stop him and he leaps, the huntsmen close beside the king use their spears.

There Is No al-Sham

Al-Sham — which has sometimes been translated as Syria, though perhaps "Greater Syria" or "the Levant" gives a clearer sense of the geography — was most recently the name of an Ottoman province based in Damascus. Iraq, by contrast, was a geographical term that came into its own with the arrival of the British in the 1920s. Operating on the sound logic of opportunism, ISIS is claiming to unite two regions that even the first opponents of the European mandate system were content to treat as separate. More recently, efforts to determine the exact frontier between Sudan and South Sudan stumbled when, after searching libraries in Khartoum, Cairo, and London, no one could find any maps showing in detail the provincial borders that the British drew a century ago. Ironically, the most successful effort yet at eliminating outdated borders drawn by 19th-century Europeans remains the European Union. And that consensus only emerged from the belated realization that a century of fighting over the continent’s true borders hadn’t done anyone any good.

What is al-Sham

al-Sham is a province centered on what is now the modern state of Syria, it also included the territory that comprises modern Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and Palestine.

It rose to prominence shortly after the Muslim conquest during the Rashidun era, but became particularly important when the Umayyad's established Damascus as their capital. At its height, Bilad al-Sham also extended into parts of the Sinai Peninsula, western Iraq, and southeast Turkey. It declined in significance after Abbasid rulers established their first capital in what is now Iraq. Nonetheless, the idea of al-Sham as a unified region remained a powerful construct, corresponding to the term "Greater Syria" which was often used in early 20th-century diplomatic and political parlance.
