How We Started

Throughout college, I was working at Plato’s Closet, where I founded some of the most versatile and kind friendships with coworkers I had ever experienced. With most of us around the same age and in long term relationships, engagements started happening while we were around 23. Some of us had been friends throughout high school, and while I wasn’t part of that group, I became close to everyone quickly. This lead to my coworker asking me to be her Personal Attendant.

Let me reiterate. I have never been part of a wedding before, much less even attending one since I was a child. I had NO idea what a personal attendant was supposed to take care of!! I did what any college kid who wanted to put off homework did - I studied. I delved deep into the topic, to avoid laundry and doing anything productive in terms of college work. I crafted an emergency kit for myself and one for the bride, I found a cute Bride robe while at work that I grabbed for my friend, and tried to be involved as possible with my busy schedule and quick timeline of the wedding.

The day of came and I met the DJ when they arrived while the bridal party were getting ready, and I was with the bride to fluff her train during pictures of her and the groom. I called my significant other, who was at the cocktail hour, and asked them kindly to light the candles and ensure the veggie trays were well stocked while everyone was finishing photos. It was my first experience, and it felt chaotic having to manage the bride and groom AND the reception venue, which I wasn’t even at. But it felt great to have it all come together in the end!

Shortly after this experience, another coworker got engaged and asked me to help her fully plan her wedding, admitting she didn’t have a lot of visual strength. We were lucky enough to be able to request specific days off together and meet after work, where we grabbed coffee and discussed everything from color schemes to attending the dress shopping appointments together. Even during work, we were able to talk smaller details. It made it very easy, instead of working around schedules, to get things accomplished. Everything from wedding invitations, to name cards, to her bouquet, to the ceremony decorations, were all planned and handcrafted by me (with the help of her and her husband to be). It was so much stress, but in the most exhilarating way! Seeing the joy celebrated that day was more than worth it.
