…Parts of the tote bags I made for Christmas gifts last year! All are reversible, except for the two in the very last picture.

As with the other tote bags, I loved being able to utilize some of the materials I already had! I continued to use the duvet cover and receiving blankets to make the straps, I also used the duvet cover to help quilt together some of the pieces for the bag itself, and I used several fabrics I had on hand to make other various parts of some of the other bags!

We are more than halfway through August! And that’s means we are only a short while away from the holiday season!

Take a look at two of the tote bags I made last Christmas as gifts for two of my child’s service providers! One is an Office Fan, and the other is a Disney fan!

The Office bag was made with material I had leftover from when I was making masks, along with material I got from one of my neighbors when she switched over her classroom theme. And the straps on both bags were made from an old duvet cover and a receiving blanket for durability!

I loved being able to both give appreciation to the people who work so hard to help our family and to utilize some fabrics I already had!

The last picture shows the other items I set inside for their gifts! I did a bottle of wine, a bath bomb, a tumbler, and I made each of them a rice pack! The rice packs can be kept in the freezer and used as an “ice pack” to help with swelling, headaches, and other aches and pains, or put in the microwave and used as a heating pad!

Check out this repair I did to a Jean skirt last fall! We patched the back to add strength and repaired the front to prevent fraying, without losing any of the width of the skirt!

Take a look at this before, during, and after!
Their bridesmaid reached out to me and asked if there was anything I could do with her dress. The manufacturer had clearly made it wrong. It’s difficult to see in the first picture, but the overlay material was sewn unevenly, , the pleats weren’t done properly and the fit was baggy.

I pinned the pleats in place on the client as well as how tight we wanted the overlay to be, in the photo with my fingers, you can see how uneven it was! Then I removed the bodice from the skirt, seam ripped out the seams for the pleating, laid everything the way I had discussed with my client and got to sewing!

The last picture is the final product. It’s kind of hard to see, but she was so happy with the result! The first and last photos were provided by my client!

Take a look at this beautiful bride I had the pleasure of doing alterations for!

In the first photo, you can see me pinning a corset back in to figure out the best placement for us and how much we needed to take the dress in, I also always take a photo of any lace before I remove it. Since I was taking this dress in at the sides and removing the zipper, you can see the original lace patterns of those areas in the first and third photos. In the third photo, if you look closely, you can also see the folded mark and the mark I made with my invisible pen of how much we were going to take in. I actually went an inch beyond that! The second photo shows the lace removed and pinned to the side for the areas I was taking in.

The next two photos are of the dress on the day it was picked up by the bride, with the last three photos being from her wedding day! (Wedding photos shared with permission from the couple’s fantastic photographer, )

Here’s what we did:

🧵 Peeled the lace, Took each side seam in 2”, then reattached
🪡 Took in several inches from the back
🧵 Converted Zipper closure to Corset Closure
🪡 Opened the Side Seams and added POCKETS!!
🧵 Added memory heart patches to one of the pockets
🪡 Hemmed it a few inches

All of the alterations took the dress from a size 22 to about a size 16!

She absolutely loved the final result and it fit her like a dream. 🥰

If you need a wedding dress altered, or want to add pockets or a memory patch, please reach out, I would love to assist you!

Did you know one of the services I offer is to add a patch to your wedding gown?

In the first photo is a patch I added of the scraps from the hem of the wedding gown with the badge number of the bride’s partner embroidered on it. We sewed it upside down on the hem so she could easily show it for photos.

The next few photos show where I cut out a heart shape from another bride’s late mom’s tshirt, embroidered “Mom” on it, then used fabric from her late dad’s shirt to patch the hole. Her mom’s tshirt was one of the very few things she had from her and she wanted it preserved as best as we could.

Finally the last photo, shows how patches from both her mom and dad’s shirts were added to the left pocket of her wedding dress so that they both wouldn’t be seen unless she wanted them to be, and so that they could “warm” her wedding ring, putting love and good energy into her marriage.

If you’ve lost a loved one, or just want to honor a living loved one by including piece of them into your wedding attire, please reach out and send a message! We would love to make a patch to help you feel close to your loved on on your special day!

Here’s a wedding dress I altered last year for my Sister-in-law!

This is one of those dresses that I completely forgot to take any photos of except for this one. At this point we had already done a lot of work to the dress to take it in and make it fit like a glove! This picture shows the pinning of the straps to shorten them and pinning up the bustle to give her an idea of what it would look like once it was finished.

Take a look at this prom dress from last year. In the first picture, you can see how most of the dresses come to me, whether they were purchased new from the shop, purchased used, ordered from online, or just sitting in the closet, they’re typically pretty wrinkled.

When I alter formal dresses for my clients, I offer complimentary steaming of the dresses for them so that they are ready to wear for their big formal events. But not everyone may need or want alterations. For those clients, I offer steaming a la carte as a service all by itself! It’s affordable, and as you can see from the photos, really elevates the look of your dress. There’s nothing worse than spending a small fortune on a prom or homecoming dress and then getting your pictures taken and realizing you can see every little line and wrinkle. I’m here to help with that!

If you would like to have your formal dress steamed so it’s wear-ready for you, contact us! Amber’s Alterations and Assortments is here to help!

And remember, homecoming is coming up quick. Make your appointment now for your alterations as we do fill up quickly!

Back in early 2023, this bride came to me with her grandmother’s wedding dress, wanting to turn it into something she could wear for one of her wedding events. (I think it was for her bridal shower, but I can’t remember!)

This dress did have long sleeves, but I removed them before the picture in order to get the bride to be able to put the dress on and get a better idea of the look and fit she was going for. The first thing we decided to do was to remove the sleeves and lace at the top and remove the bow. She also asked me to use some of the fabric from the dress to make a handkerchief as a memento for her grandma.

After that, we did a major hem, being careful to adjust the ruffles to flow with the new length and add one back to the front of the dress, added a corset back so that it was adjustable for her, and made some spaghetti straps!

The bride was very pleased when she picked up the dress and later contacted me telling me her whole family loved it!

Remember that wedding gown we turned into a christening blanket? The client contacted me and told me she had another grand baby that was getting baptized and she would love to have a christening outfit made for them. I used what was left of the wedding gown to make a christening gown, booties, and a bonnet. It turned out so cute!

Swipe for the before and afters on this jacket I repaired last year!

One of the interior seams of the lining frayed and opened and one of the pockets also frayed and was not able to be used because of it. I opened up the jacket, resewed the seams, then used my serger to finish the edges of the seams so that they won’t unravel again!

Today was a beautiful, although humid, day for a wedding! It was a pleasure getting to know and tell Lauren and Carter’s love story to their guests and officiating their ceremony today. Thankfully the rain stopped and this beautiful couple got the outdoor ceremony they had been dreaming of.

To Carter and Lauren, thank you for trusting me to be a part of your special day. I wish you many blessings and years of love and friendship. Congratulations Mr. And Mrs. Culkin! You know what they say… you can’t untie a wet knot! 💍

If you or someone you know is getting married, please send a message! I would love the opportunity to make your day special and unique!

!

About 2 1/2 years ago I altered this dress for a bride… truthfully, I don’t remember everything we did to the dress aside from the hem and taking in the corset because it was so long ago. I have so many photos on my phone that I haven’t shared, so in the coming weeks, I’ll be attempting to get caught up and sharing some of my past work.

I do remember this dress, like many I still see today, had a more complicated hem because of the lace appliqués that needed to be removed before I could trim the tulle layer, and then resewn back on. And because of the contrast between the black and the white, I had to make sure it was perfect for my client because any small error would be extremely noticeable. My client was so happy with this dress when she came to pick up.

I love seeing my brides wear something that represents their taste or their personality, even if it’s not traditional. What did you wear for your wedding? Something out of the box, or traditional white/ivory?

This small client reached out asking if I could add a little fluff to her treasured Baby Margaret. She had very specific instructions on where to add the fluff and how much so that she was still able to cuddle her. I also gave her a nice long soak and wash to brighten her up a bit!

For the first time ever today, I let one of my little loves help me at the machine. Not yet 2, and E helped with raising and lowering the presser foot, turning and guiding the fabric, and pressing the back button. E was overjoyed. My heart is so full being able to share my passion with my little one. ❤️
