Pasture-raised eggs are often called ‘expensive’ or ‘overhyped,’ but let’s get one thing straight: the difference isn’t just the yolk color.

Factory-farmed eggs come from hens crammed into cages, fed soy and corn, and often pumped with antibiotics.

Meanwhile, pasture-raised hens roam freely, foraging naturally and getting exposure to sunlight.

The nutritional difference? Higher omega-3s, more vitamin D, and fewer inflammatory fats.

Don’t let anyone convince you that an egg is just an egg—there’s a reason those free-range ones cost more, and it’s worth every penny.

I see new homesteaders, and I love them—all the excitement in their eyes, the thrill of their first egg, their first pepper, their first jar of something homemade on the pantry shelf.

I remember that feeling. I was there once. But after 14 years of being here at the farm, it's... different. The rhythms are familiar, the challenges are somewhat predictable, and the wins are almost… expected.

I love this life. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. But that spark—that giddy, bubbly, wide-eyed wonder—isn’t what it used to be.

And honestly? I kinda miss it.

But.

*Not* feeling that spark doesn’t mean something is wrong. In fact, it’s probably completely normal.

Because I kinda think that maybe homesteading, like anything else, isn’t meant to stay in the honeymoon phase forever. Maybe it’s more like a solid and steady and reliable marriage—the kind where the butterflies chill out, but the commitment and comfort and quiet joy grow stronger.

There’s something powerful about living a homesteading life where you no longer have to guess (well, mostly 🤣), where you can move through the seasons with confidence (again, mostly), and where you’ve learned enough to teach others (even though there is still lots to learn yourself.)

So maybe the key to getting excited again (staying excited?) isn’t chasing the feeling of *new*, but appreciating the depth of... *knowing*?

Watching new homesteaders is exciting because THEY are excited! But it's also kinda cool because it's a reminder of how far we’ve come and how much we've learned.

Are you a newbie or an old "pro"? How do you feel about your journey right now?

Farms & Homesteads Close to Upstate, SC: We want to come visit you!

We learn and we grow by seeing what other people are doing! We want to talk about your wins and your losses and see what real-life farms look like instead of the manicured, overpriced versions we see on Pinterest and YouTube.

We want to bring our family to you and spend an hour or so interviewing and touring your sanctuary. Even if it’s a porch garden and an active sourdough – schedule a meeting with us today!
