twofold is a tactical sonic interventionist who blurs the line between tool tracks and experimentation. Experimentation is the name of their game, and they always release songs that make a statement on the ever present “future of music” discourse from music analysts. Instead of lingering or wandering around, the tracks get in, say what they have to say, repeat it once for good measure, and bow out gracefully.

They play with futuristic ideas, referencing black innovators from Detroit, footwork DJs in Chicago, Jersey club pioneers, and revolutionary ballroom culture, while retaining a certain sound design language that evokes glossy or dystopian imagery. To them the future is always-already present.

They come from a family of musicians, and their family had a little upright piano at home—it was already out of tune when they were old enough as a little kid to play around on it, with a broken sustain pedal. But they actually fell in love with making music in high school, first with pirated versions of Finale (a notation software), and then a demo of Ableton Live.

When asked what to expect when they make their debut, they said,
“My debut DJ set… it feels crazy just thinking that. I plan to play some Jersey club, some ballroom, some other club-inspired things. I’ll probably play a few original twofold tracks as well, maybe some unreleased ones. More than that I’m just going to try to bring the same energy I want to hear from a set—things that make me want to move.

Rei and twofold initially met as internet denizens through the EATDIS label. Recently twofold has been listening to SOPHIE a lot, and they still reference some of Vektroid’s non-sampled tracks.

When asked about influences from peers and non musical creatives they replied,
“I can also say that I’m inspired in a broader sense by a lot of different artists, architects and designers, like the architect Zaha Hadid. I also owe a lot to fellow artists who I’ve met online, who have exchanged ideas with me—like alptrack, Sepha, or Zvrra. I think those three alone have contributed to, like, over half of my artistic experimentation in the past two years.”
