March 8th is International Women’s day! Here Grin-Houston we are grateful for all the work that has been done for Women’s right and we are also fighting for all that is yet to be accomplished. This year’s theme is .
As we think about ways to achieve this ambitious goal, let me share some alarming facts with you:
1- 736 millions women (almost 1 in 3) have experienced physical and/or s*xual violence.
2- 81 000 women and girls were killed by an intimate partner or family member (equal to 1 women or girl killed every 11 minutes in her home).
3- 15 millions adolescents girls worldwide (15-19) have been forced to have s*x.
4- In Mali, one of the countries were the Happy Helpers offer services, 499200 students were forced out of school as a result of the pandemic. This has led to many young girl being forced into marriage at a younger age.
5- Slavery is still going in some African countries.
As you read this post, I hope that you find these numbers unacceptable and/or unbelievable. I’m still chocked that this is part of our reality. As the world face increasing challenges, let’s not forget about the consequences these challenges have on children, young girls and Women.
What will you do to make a difference? As you think about this question, let me suggest the following:
*Do check in on your friends, loved ones, colleagues, neighbors, strangers. Make sure they know someone care about them and that someone is there.
* Offer support, understanding and a listening ear to those one needs. Step out of judgment.
* Donate to/ volunteer with an organization that is fighting for a noble cause.
*Support women own business.
*Be involved and engaged not just Today, but Everyday.
*Take care of YOURSELF!
